auto tranny

I got the '71 Commando running the other day. Driving it off the trailer and around the yard showed a problem, though. The tranny seems to have excessive slip when accelerating and then doesn't want to stop pushing when you let off the throttle and get on the brakes. The front wheels will actually lock and skid for several feet before the Jeep will stop.
It has the :v6: with the auto (TH400, I believe) tranny. The Jeep sat, unused for several years before I got it. About 10k miles ago, the transmission was rebuilt.
Could things just be sticking from sitting for so long? Maybe a disconnected vacuum line? Am I way off and the tranny is about to explode, killing thousands of innocent people?
I am far from being an expert on auto transmissions. Any help would be appreciated.

 

sounds more like brake problem
wheel cylinders froze up or master cylinder problem
the tranny could be low on fluid, or the internal seals dried out from just sitting
check the fluid level, warm, idling in park I believe

 

a high engine idle would keep the Jeep from slowing down as well
sticky throttle cable, choke linkage, return spring, etc etc

 

re-reading your post again, if you have power brakes, a bad vac hose, check valve, or booster would cause lack of power brakes; it would take a lot of pedal pressure to stop the Jeep then as well..

 

I forgot to mention, the idle doesn't seem overly high. There isn't a tach, so I can't give you numbers, but it isn't racing. Pedal pressure isn't unreasonable either. The front brakes are locking and the rear brakes are just plain being overpowered. It sure seems like more of a torque converter/transmission issue.

 

Sounds like a converter or clutch issue to me. Something is sticking. I would change the fluid and drive it around the yard for a few hours to see if it will losen up. May need to go through the transmission again, good thing the rebuild kits are cheap.
