Worth of original pto winch in working condition?

my pto winch on my 69cj5 is complete and in working order. i'm planning to wheel this jeep and i dont really want to use it. for starters i dont think it will hold up to hard winching and its original. i dont care and i would rather see it go to a jeep that is being restored so it stays nice. i dont know much about it. it runs off my dana 18 t-case. front mounted. whats it worth? thanks

 

its a koeinig. with the pto and driveshaft. the pto just unbolts from the t-case correct?

 

Correct. You will need a pto cover and bolts for the cover for the back of the transfer case where the pto is removed. Ask around, someone probably has one laying around for a few bucks or cost of shipping. Can you post pics? There are two types of Koenigs. One is commonly called a low mount which mounts with bolts going in the front and in the back of the winch. I believe this is the model 100 but would have to double check. There is another style, don't remember model # that is commonly called the tripod mount style because the mounts bolt from the bottom and have a tall tripod mount or triangle mount with the point being at the top with the drum shaft mounted in a bushing near the top. The model 100 is the stronger of the two, but either can be desirable depending on completeness and condition. Location can have an effect on value also as this stuff is fairly heavy and awkward to ship and can be expensive to do so. Please fill out your location so people know where you are at. It saves some aggravation on the part of people who wish to help. Besides, one of us may be right around the corner and can help you out!
By the way, a PTO winch will normally out pull an electric winch as they don't rely on battery reserves/alternator/electrical system and they don't heat up and burn out motors like an electric winch can/does. That being said, a PTO winch is not for everyone as it requires special care to operate and maintain. A good quality electric winch can be much more user friendly for most people.
A good usable shape model 100 Koenig that is complete usually sells for in the neighborhood of $4-500 but have seen ones with the bumper/mounts, pto, shafts, etc that was real nice sell for more. Nickmil.

At least post pics of the winch so we can all ogle over it. I wheel the pee out of my jeep and have used my PTO many times for numerous and frequent pulls when the other jeeps with electrics had to call it a day due to battery issues. Keep it and use it! Just my $.02

I'm thinking stick with the PTO...the other guys with the brand new Warn Winches may gawk and laugh at your old winch....right up till theirs overheats and shuts down, or when their battery goes dead, and asks you to pull them out.

On the other hand and I've never really considered this an issue. If your engine stalls you're screwed, but those with electric winches are too.

 

Not really true... I did short pulls for ~15 minutes with my 12k lb winch and still had battery left. Saved my butt royally that day, as without that winch I would have rolled down the side of a cliff, I had the front tied off to a tree winching sideways and my buddy was dragging he rear of my jeep sideways while I wet myself...

BUT i still feel that a hydraulic or PTO winch is MUCH better suited for wheeling, they arent affected by water either. (unless a line is leaking) they will pull all day long

 

i worry about breaking original parts and not finding them again.

ooh ooh, that one still has the free spooling clutch mechanism attached.

 

I haven't seen one with the original clutch/brake mechanism, can you take several more pics of that and post them here. Mine had been busted off and a spool cage built around it to keep the cable on the spool. Note your pic with cable near gearbox,if that happens during a pull- gonna break something. My cage is welded to the base plate and does not attach to actual winch. Lots of use hauling elk to the freezer by the P.O.
