67 Jeepster 225 rebuild

well ive had my jeepster for a week now and the motor is still locked up, i have had all kinds of penetrating oil sititng in the cylinders and it still wont budge.. i can put a pull bar on the front and a 5 foot pipe and turn the nut, but im sure its just the nut getting tighter and geting closer to breaking each time, i do not want that to happen.... so my question is. how much is a engine rebuild for this buick "dauntless v6" going to cost me? i know it will be easy, but im wondering about the price. if anyone knows the best place to order the piston kit and etc.. please reply

 

I'd suggest pricing out a master rebuild kit at AutoZone, part #BU225MK01 for $355.99. Comes w/ everything: pistons, cam, bearings, gaskets, etc.

 

I'll 2nd that, my engine was rebuilt last march using this kit, no problems at all. Good parts!!!!

 

im not into spending that kind of $, but it is a awesome deal.... how much are just the pistons kit and gaskets i got the jeepster for free.. its a budget project b/c i have way to many other things going on to spend $ on it

 

I'd think the cheapest, if you can't free the engine, would be a used replacement engine. Pistons (and machining) are the most expensive individual parts of a rebuild; if you can reuse your pistons, you may be able to patch up the engine you have for cheap.

 

Don't know if you've tried this or not but, might try draining the oil and fill the block and cylinders with diesel fuel. Let it sit for a couple days and retry it. It's worked for me before. To have the 225 rebuilt your looking at $1000 to $2000 depending on condition and location. It's $1400-$1800 around here.

why so much?! ive got a guy here that does all my motor work for 30$ per cylinder.
but thanks for the diesel fuel idea.. ill probly try it, ill try anything before i take this thing apart i may be able to reuse my pistons and just hone out the cylinders.. it wont make any diference to me if it smokes a little.. its not going to be a daily driver

ok almost at my last resort... my question iswhat motors out of what vehicles will drop in my 67 jeepster?! i may can get one cheaper than a rebuild or can get it in with alot less trouble than trying to free these pistons. also does this motor have enough clearance to take the bottom half off and push the pistons out the top..? i know some motors we're able to do that. then re-ring the pistons just havent checked this one yet hopefully the rust isin't too deep into the cylinder walls so i can get slightly oversized rings or possibly reuse mine.. i wont mind a little smoke

 

It's kind of brutal, but have you tried dragging it yet? Of course, only possible if it rolls, and with a manual transmission.

V6 engines from Buicks are similar, depending on the year. Small block Buick V8s from the 70s (300, 340, 350 cid) will drop in if you cut the core support and move the radiator forward.

 

That's what I was talking about but out here it's closer to $250 per cylinder. Unless you call TA Performance then your talking $5000 for a rebuilt motor.

yeah i wasnt talking about all that but he does bore for 30$ per cylinder... no i havnt tried dragging it... i dont want to crack the rings... but i may have to. yes it does roll fine. all gears are good and even the clutch works well. but will i be able to replace the rings eaisly like i mentioned earlier about pushing the pistons out from the bottom up, re-ring, then drop back in?! i was hoping i was lucky enough for this to be one of those few motors that allows that by taking the bottom half of the motor off...

 

I would pull the 225 and junk it. Get on the net and find a 231 and drop it in there. It will bolt right up and does not have the timing issues that the 225 has. You should be able to get a good 231 for less than 500.00 I did my 71 and could not be any more happy.

 

Mine had self adjusting timing and ran like crap most of the time. The timing would have to be adjusted about every 100 miles or so. I have read that this feature was common in the dauntless.

 

well that sucks. when i got it i didint wana spend any$ on it.. i will start taking the top end off soon and mabye i can get the pistons out.. hone the cylinders so itl run with some bigger rings... idc if it smokes alot
