Buick V6 water pumps lengths

    Buick V6 water pumps come in several lengths.

    The 225 had a shorter pump than the 231.

    How much shorter?


    I have a 1975 231 odd-fire in my 66 CJ6 and the pump shaft is too long.
    with a 4" extension--I have about 1-1/2 inch from the fan to the front cross member.
    2" extension will not fit on the pump shaft because the extension bottoms out on the long shaft.

    When mounting the radiator on top of the cross member the max clearance is that 1-1/2 inches-- If I rev the engine and the frame flexed from a rough road---- the fan and radiator might connect and WAMB! Good=bye fan and radiator---

    Due to this, I have ordered a 1967 Buick V6 water pump-- but how much shorter is the earlier pump?

    Anyone know?

    225 is definately shorter, i am guessing the shorter of the bunch. When i installed the 4.1L in my jeep, i had to swap pumps because it was too long. if i remember i also looked at a 231 pump and it was too long. 225 worked like a charm.

    i've heard that the 198 v6 (built only in 62 and 63) had the shortest pump of all. i can't confirm this as i've never compared it to a 225 or 231 pump. the 198 pump works on the 215 v8 also, but i doubt it would work on the 225/231, but i'm not sure. just something to consider.

    From where the water pump mounts on the timing cover, to the mounting surface on the nose for the pully:
    231 - 4 1/2"
    225 - 3 3/4"

    By the 4 I have sitting in the shop.

    And Linc - the 198 pump won't work on the 225

    Just came in from the shop. I checked a 225 and 2-231's - water pump on each was 3 5/8" from gasket surface to hub face. All of these were in jeeps so the pumps were probably swapped on the 231's.

    Edit - took me too long walking to the shop and back! Chuck beat me to it.

    I've had this happen to me on the trail. LOL. I have both pumps as well and one thing I've noticed is that the impeller on the 231 pump is bigger than the 225 pump. but the both pumps are the same length.

    Both my 231's have longer pumps, and all 3 225's have the shorter pump. I even have different sets of pullys for the different engines, and believe me, they don't mix (tried that when I pulled the Red 231 out and put the KB 225 in the red '51).

    I have a Jeepster 225 pulley set.

    I want about 3 inches fan to radiator distance-- then I will build an air dam and cowling.

    Sound like the shorter 225 pump and less extension will do the trick--

    Here's another:

    225 mounting surface to hub face: 3 1/2"
    231 mounting surgace to fub face: 4 5/8"

    I thought I read in another thread recently that there is also a differences in the set back from the front of the grill to point where the radiator mounts. I assumed that meant that there are two different front clips, one for the F-134 equiped CJ-5 and another for the 225. I don't remember which is which but I do have a 68 with a V6 in which the end of the water pump is so close to the radiator that I had to remove the fan after it destroyed the radiator. Based on what I read I think I have a front clip for a F-134 in my jeep and need to change it out for a V6.
    Can anyone confirm what I read?

    My CJ6 came with a 134 F head
    When I put the V6 in there was no way to keep the grill radiator sheet metal-- so I cut it back about 5 inches. Currently I have the radiator re-mounted on a bracket.

    The most radiator fans that mount of the water pump bow toward the radiator when the engine revs up. It can bow more then an inch.
    If your frame flexes at the sametime-- the fan will hit the radiator and distroy both and disable the Jeep. If you only run a Jeep on the street one and a half inches will work-- but if you do trails eventually the frame, and radiator will cause the fan to get too close and hit the radiator.

    No matter what Grill you have I would recomment 2-1/2 inches distance between the fan and radiator. Then build a wind damn or cowling to improve fan suction and cooling.
