I just got the finishing touches on my 75 cj5 and i was so pumped to drive it to school tomorrow. But... wen I pulled out to take it on a test run down the road and tried to stop the brakes just went to the floor. We had done everything right and then I looked at this thing: http://www.picturetrail.com/gallery/view?p=999&gid=9151206&uid=4322909&members=1

Do you see that thing where all the brake lines meet? when i press the brake pedal air bubbles come out of that and if you can see brake fluid is slowly leaking. What is this? Is it hard to get/replace? Has anyone replaced one? HOw do I do it? Thanks a bunch.
When you click the link it's the first 2 pictures.

Unfortunately, I'm not familiar with the part you're showing. (my '57 doesn't have one of those that I recall...)

Where in Az are you? (You may want to fill in your profile in the "User CP" section....)

Hope you get it sorted out!

    Howdy,
It's hard to see in the pic but it looks like your preportioning valve....that's the device that adjusts pressure between the front discs and the rear drums. figure out what fitting is leaking...take it apart and replace. don't cross thread your fittings! Make sure to use only double flared lines. Bleed brakes as normal and your set. Where in Ms are you?

Thanks a bunch. But I dont have disc brakes in the front just drums all around. I'm down on the gulf coast, bay st. louis, well what's left of it lol. Do you know where I can get one? And how hard it is to do it?

Roger that. I'm in Purvis. I've got some good friends in the Bay that got tore up. The thing in the pic is your combination valve. Section 9-1 in the Haynes Jeep manual explains how to deal with it. Napa can probably source the part. Make sure that it's not just a connection leaking.

    Hey JacksonCJ5:

I've had real good luck with these guys.

http://www.jeepdoc.com/, I used them when I did my axle/brake rebuild for flex hoses, wheel cylinders, ect.. Prices were actually less than most of the local houses. My one suggestion is do not cut corners on this area of your vechile, by the best parts possible, they my cost a little more, but they are worth the xtra money.

As was mentioned, ensure that you'r lines are double flaired, yuo can by the tool for ~$20 bucks. These seem to be the china stuff, works but don't try and make a living with them...

My son and brother are over there in Bay St. Louis working on the clean up. Some of the stories they have told me of the damage is unbelievabe, but what really gets me is the waste that they see of the $$'s going to the clean up efforts. Typical gov't BS. My son is working 77 to 84 hours a week. This is some good money for a 19 year old!!!

Anyway best of luck, don't get fustriated, it will all come together..

The cleanup is going great and sadly a lot of those stories arn't tall tale but send my thanks to your brother and son. Those are the people that are really the ones getting us all back to normal.

I don't recall if this year uses a proportioning or combination valve. It instead may be a junction with the brake safety switch in it. If so, it's just a switch; its function is to detect a pressure difference between the front and rear brake systems. It would also have a wire that activates the brake service light on the dash.

I don't think so. Most of the 77-78 CJs had disk brakes, and you typically don't need a proportioning valve for drums.

You need the help of someone with a '75 factory manual. Your part should be identified there. Also, someone with a parts book could look up the PN 5356622 and tell you if its intended for disk or drum.

Don't be so hasty Dave ... The Haynes manuals cover lots of years, and a '75 may not have this valve. Also, combination valve means a combined proportional and residual valve. You shouldn't need a proportioning valve with a all-drum system, so if it's a valve, it will be a residual valve AFAIK.

Not hasty just helpful. According to the Haynes manual Section 9-1 all models after 1974 use a combination valve. The valve is pictured in this section and looks exactly like the picture provided in JacksonCJ's link. I agree that a FSM specific to a 1975 would be most helpful. I just thought I'd share what resources I had available.

After reading further in Section 9-3 it states that in order to effectively bleed the brakes on 74-76 models with four drum brakes... the brake warning swithch, wires, plunger, and spring must be removed from the combination valve prior to actual bleeding. Apparently the valve is used to balance the front to rear pressure during hard braking in the early models and later used to preportion front discs to rear drums. Same design, different end use.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

my book says it is not a proportioning valve, just a junction block to accomodate the pressure/warning switch
the correct p/n for 74-75 is: 5352422 availability, unknown
if it is leaking around the switch, then it would have to be replaced as the switch was not serviced seperately (you most likely can take it apart)
plugging it off might be an option as well, it's your Jeep

I just saw that on 9-1 in my haynes manual about bypassing the valve. I'm going to try that tomorrow and give an update. Thanks again.
