TH400 auto shifter question

    Hi,
I have a CJ5 W/ a TH400 auto trans. I have a B+M cable opreated shifter. My question is: Does anyone know what locks out other gears when you are in drive? If I am going forward, I can shift to neutral and then to reverse while still moving, with the result of total lock up. Is the lock out in the shifter or in the trans?

There's only one shift lever on the transmission, no? You can't shift into two gears at once. As I recall, yes, you can shift into reverse going forward. It will kill the engine, but you can do it. Maybe it will do worse at higher speed. Agasin, IIRC, the park position is just neutral with a pawl physically stopping the output shaft from moving.

On the column shifter there's a detent so that you have to lift the handle to go from neutral to reverse or park. No other lockout that I know of.

This is a floor shifter with a cable. Is there supposed to be something in the shifter to keep you from shifting into R when moving forward?

Not normally, I think its done that way for ease of shifting between all three positions. LIke Tim said, just don't do it at high speeds...not too many people would do this...but it has happened to me in cars where I accidently knocked the shifter forward...when driving 55 I remember nothing happened becuase I was fast putting it back into gear. Another time I was going slower...maybe 25 mph and the tranny started clickink weirdly and wanting to go into gear...again I had it back into drive and nothing ever happened to the tranny...But the best thing I can think of is if you feel like you need it, you might be able to make a shift stop yourself or see if they manufacture has one.

I thought in recent years that most shifters had dentents of some sort or some mechanical limitation such as pushing down or to the side. If yours doesn't there are several out there that do.
