Nothing really new here, but this is how I did mine.

    Parts:

P/S Pump Bracket from a pick-n-pull (they had a pile of them, and I picked the one that looked right).

P/S Pump from FLAPS to fit a late 70's Buick Skylark with the V6. There's two different ones listed, one for a car with A/C, one without I think. I forgot which one I got, but it took a couple of tries to get it right.

P/S Hoses from FLAPS. Bought hoses to fit late 70's CJ. The didn't fit, and I had to bend them to work (very tough to bend without kinking, btw).

P/S Box and lower shaft from a late 70's CJ.

P/S Column, universal and upper shaft from a postal jeep (DJ).

P/S Column to body clamp was fabricated (1/8 plate and a split collar clamp).

P/S Box Bracket was fabricated using McRuff's design.

Double hole tie rod end, drag link and tie rod came from Herm.

Installation was pretty straightforward. I used the top splined end off the postal shaft, and cut the universal off the CJ lower shaft. I slid the postal shaft into the CJ shaft, welded it and drilled and pinned it. I now that some say welding on the shaft is a no-no, but I don't think I'll ever break mine. Seems very stout and solid. I also had to cut a good size notch in my motor mount, but I think that's because my body is toast, and saggin badly (that's another project).

One note though, if you want to try and move the steering wheel up any (toward the driver), you won't be able to do it easily using the postal column. There's just enhough length to maintain the stock location of the steering wheel without the universal hitting the firewall.

Driving Impression: Awsome. After driving this thing for over 15 years, sawing the steering wheel back and forth like a mad man, it's great to have a jeep that I can drive with one hand, on or off the highway. It has taken some getting use to, since the effort once needed to make a curve will now send me into the ditch on the opposite side of the road. But, I would do it again in a heartbeat. Only wish I had done this earlier.

Now, let's see if I can attach some pics.....

So, any good sources for a DJ column? Trying to start gathering parts as I find them cheap for a conversion (hopefully) this spring when I (hopefully) do a full tear down and rebuild of the body and frame.

Has anyone with a buick v6 done the saggy swap on their flattie moving the box to the engine compartment Herm style and had their cooling fan hit the steering box? Does grinding down the fan throw the fan out of balance and ruin the water pump?

Grinding down the fan will definitely throw the fan out of balance and would probably sling the fan apart before ruining the water pump.

I've ground down the fan fan and started the engine. It seems turn turn just fine. I'm tghinking the diameter of the fan isn't all that huge so it shouldn't make a difference. There doesn't appear to be much vibration or shimmy. It's not like it's a prop for a plane. It's a six blade fan so doesn't the more blades make it less of an issue for balance? Or am I just too concerned about something that is not much concern.

I would be concerned with it,any inbalance is not good. Can you locate a smaller fan at a salvage yard or maybe go electric.

Your waterpump bearing my prematurly wearout do to balancing issues. I went to electric.Big atvantage.More ponies,And you can unplug it during water crossings.manual fans throw water all over the motor and the ignition.Thats what causes the stall in the stream.been there done that.

I'm having issues with fan clearance on my cj6 on my cj6 :v6: Herm conversion. pics when I figure it out. Should work eventually if I ever get time to work on it.

I have modified and used the stock steering column both times and really like it, I like the stock bus wheel in a Jeep!:)

I welded up a bracket to mount a saggy box to the frame of my 2A. Two of the bolts go right through the frame with sleeves. The crossmember under my rad is already replaced but I had to mod it for clearance. I will make hoses to connect to the stock Power Steering pump on my GM truck Vortec 4.8L LR4 V8. I am using a flat pitman arm as I did a tie rod flip on my Dana 30 knuckles. I also used a Big Daddy tie rod set for my narrow track Dana 30. They are super beefy. The steering shaft is a 80's Jeep CJ unit connected to a GM column. I will probably swap the column when I get to the finishing of the Jeep to a Ididit or Flaming River floor shift ignition in the dash style.

Could I use the column and box out of an XJ on a 1970 Cj5?

the xj has a really quick ratio for the cj5, my brother tried one in his 74, it was unsafe, just turn the wheel a little bit and you where off the road. Find one from a newer cj5.

I got a rebuilt from NAPA. But I had to explain to them the ratio I was looking for. Anything above 3.5 turns lock to lock, preferably 4 at least.

Here is ours. We used Advance Adapters weld-on bracket. Went with an AGR box. Stainless Flaming River steering knuckles and rod to a Flaming River stainless tilt column. Oh yeah, its a 54 cj3b

What model GM cars and trucks would have the right size column to swap in an early CJ5? I need to figure which one I need at the junk yard for the up coming Saginaw conversion.
