Overdrive Problem

I am having a problem with my Warn overdrive. I twin-sticked my d18 t-case and re-installed my o/d. I was able to shift the overdrive into overdrive mode once but now it won't shift back to standard drive. I've tried down shifting the o/d while rolling and standing still but it won't budge. It seems it will only shift down between the two gears (like a nuetral position). I don't want to force anything trying to get it to shift. Anyone had this kind of problem?

That would be my first guess also. If it worked before and you didn't change anything inside the OD, seems like it should be OK. You may find some interference with the twin stick front output bearing retainer. Also, are you sure you got the star washer and special nut installed correctly in the OD?

I'm thinking that the shift fork for the OD is *behind* the shift ring, and not *in* the shift ring. I.E. the fork has no surface to lever against in order to pull the O.D. back out. Clear as mud?

I had the detent ball on the od shifter lock up. It took both feet against the dash to move the shifter. I took the spring and ball out and it shifted fine. Cleaned the hole and the ball real well and hasn't done it again.

If that were the case, then it wouldn't go into neutral.

I agree with the others, sounds like a linkage problem to me.

The linkage doesn't seem to be binding anywhere. I cut the bracket that holds the shift lever and flipped it so I could mount the lever behind the twin sticks using the right rear & right middle trans cover bolts. I then shortened the linkage rod to fit. A sort of unrelated note here is that I snapped the shift rod while trying to bend it to clear the twin sticks  . This was done off the jeep in a vise and I thought I had it hot enough but I guess not. I have ordered a new one. In the meantime, I have the 8" nub of a lever installed. This certainly reduces the leverage but I would think I shoud still be able to shift.
As far as the special nut & locking clip go, I torqued the nut to around 110 pounds and I triple checked to make sure the snap ring was in the groove. I did replace the brass synchro ring because my other one had broken into three pieces. Nothing was missing ( it broke cleanly in three spots) from the synchro so I don't think any pieces found there way into the overdrive. I made sure that the synchro ring was fitting into the three pins and I used grease to hold it in place while re-installing the o/d unit.
I will check out the poppet ball - maybe it is dirty and hanging up. Any other thoughts you might have 'bout this problem?

I'm still trying to figure out this overdive problem so I am reviving my thread in hopes of some new ideas. I removed the bolt holding the poppet ball and spring in and I found some pretty thick oil/grease in there. With the spring removed, shouldn't the ball fall out? It seems stuck in there. Any ideas on getting it out of there to check it. I have triple checked the linkage and there are no hang ups. Is there a thread with info about the warn overdrive ( like and exploded diagram) somewhere? I searched but found nothing. My next move may be to remove the back cover and see what's inside but I really don't want to go there if possible. Any words of wisdom from any one?
