I recently bought a 1980 Jeep CJ-5 and noticed that most of the body was original, and on the hood the decal said "Cheetah" I have searched the internet, and not turned anything up. I was hopeing that somone here could possibly get me some more information on the Jeep CJ-5 Cheetah. The help would be greatly appreciated, and just may sway my decision from making it cool/fancy paint job to a restoration of the CJ as a whole, with a few things made more modern. Thanks for any help I can get!

First off, welcome from north east KS!

Second, I can't say I've ever heard of an Early CJ-5 "Cheetah" but there's others around here who might have and should be able to help.

The fellow that owned the jeep prior to you was a Texas hold-'em player that dealt from the bottom of the deck.

He was from south of Atlanta Georgia.

    Howdy from W. MI...

That spot on the hood seems to invite personalization...so I wouldn't be *too* dissapointed if it doesn't turn out to be a factory package of any sort.

Tho I suppose a motived dealer could have designed it to move the Jeep faster.

I have never seen a cj5 that was that new that had a Cheeta package but it was a factory offered package back in 74 -75 I know. I had a friend that had an original 1975 Cheeta cj 5 with a 304, factory mags and a few other things including a totally different set of seats from the standard factory units at the time.

In my first post looking for info on my Jeep, I think McGruff mentioned that my Jeep looked like it might have the "Cheetah" paint scheme. I did a lot of searching at that time and found nothing else on it either. Since that time I have discovered that I believe I have a '75 tub on the '70 Jeep. Here is a link to my webshots album of what the Jeep looked like when I got it.

Could be regional like the Trans-south TransAms, or the Hugger or the Yenko's Camaro's, but they do exist I have seen them in person, they were all the same color as Tiger Sharks and had black pin striping along with the Cheetah decals on the hood where the renegade decals went.

    forget regional
more likely local: a single dealer or chain of dealers
parts books were distributed nationwide, not by region
if it was original factory, it would be available to all dealers
not a factory option IMO, some dealer adding it on at dealership
