Hello, I am new to this site. Bought 1974 CJ5 but can’t make any improvements until I can locate the VIN or partial VIN on the frame. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to site. :wel:
    Introductions are here: Introductions | ECJ5 (earlycj5.com)
There is an extensive database here. Have you tried searching?
The '74 model is considered an Intermediate (not Early).

x2, Also look at the top edge of the frame rail near the top shock absorber mount. May need to wire brush it to be able to make it out.

The vin on a ‘74 should be on a yellow sticker on the dashboard, left side of the steering column. There also should be a small aluminum plaque with the model and serial number located on the upper driver’s side firewall in the engine bay. At minimum, you may only see 4 small screw holes if the plaque is missing.
There may be the last 5 or 6 digits of a serial number stamped into the frame, but I’m not sure of the location for an intermediate (AMC) Jeep.

The frame stamping is on the right frame rail, ahead of the shock mount. It’s the last five (I think) digits of your VIN.

This is for intermediate (‘72-‘75) CJs.

Here it is on my ‘75 frame:

The “J5” indicates Jeep CJ (I presume) and 1975.

You should have no issues doing any upgrades with your CJ regardless of the VIN.
What did you have in mind?

Thanks for the info and the photo. I am currently living in impossible California. Hoping to move to anywhere but CA..and hoping to have the option to take the Jeep. I have two good VINs on the tub but want to verify the frame VIN anticipating the transfer process wherever I relocate. Need to repair or replace the engine and other parts. The engine is out so I got a good look at the frame and saw no VIN. Going back out to triple check.

I had to wire brush to see my number, was filled with paint, totally invisible.

    Do you have a title?
Does the title VIN match either of the VIN's you have? If so, run with the matching VIN's and call it good.
I'm not seeing anybody trying to verify a VIN by inspecting the frame, but I could be wrong.
As for parts, CJ5/7's come in three basic configurations.
    Early 55-71
    Intermediate 72-75
    Late 76-86
They are easily identifiable and many parts overlap these era's.

Found the VIN. Right where John B said it would be. Thanks to all who offered up their help.
