Seam Sealer Recommendations?

Have anyone used "seam sealer'' of some kind on panel joints? My 74 has a paintable calk or sealer of some kind the factory used where panels were just spot welded together, like where the floor panels joined the side panels ect. I was wanting to seal up my new wheel house notch weld seams inside the wheel well. Thanks

 

Mortite? Similar to OEM.

In other applications, I favor Lexcel for ease of use and long-term effectiveness.

 

Thank you Pete. The factory used what looks like the moretite between the body and front fenders and the trans tunnel cover where panels are bolted together. I noticed that there was what looks like a calk bead along the joint where the rear floor panel joins by spot welds to the wheel house panel. A tiny little calk bead that was painted over. this is what I was asking about. This calk apparently dried fairly hard and was painted over. The old calk on my jeep has dried out hard and crumbly in 49 years. The Lexcel looks promising, just have to make sure it is stable enough for automotive paint so the paint will stick and not crack. Maybe try some and paint over it and see how it behaves.

It is "mineral-spirit clean up," and supposedly 'paintable.' OTH, one reason I like Lexcel is because it remains fundamentally flexible, so YMMV.

 

Bought this recently from an auto body shop supplier. I haven’t used it yet so can’t speak to how good or bad it is but this is what they recommended for an automotive seam sealer …

I was going to use this to seal up the seam on my tailgate before painting it.

 

I used this and it took to being painted well. This product is thinner / less viscous than the some of the urethane products, which may or may not be desirable for your application.

I would use somethimg by 3m most is pricey but you get what you pay for. personally i use 3m brushable sealer most of the time 3M 08656 Brushable Seam Sealer - 30.4 oz | eBay
