Looking for a cheap winter beater that has a good PA inspection. Don't really care what it is as long as it's front or four wheel drive and is cheap. Relatively local to York PA. Mini van, Cherokee, Honda Civic, whatever. Just throwing it out there. Whiiiiiiiiiiiiizzzzzzzzzzzz. Plunk.

A 240 wagon would be even better! Used mine as work truck, built like a tank.

I support that statement 100%, but he’s asking for AWD or FWD.

I bought mine off a friend of a friend 18 years ago.
Him: “Hey, I have a Volvo for ya! $1000!”
    Me: “Awesome! What is it?”
    Him: “An 850.”
Me: “Ugh. Front wheel drive?? Yuck.”

I hoped that car would die for the first year, then I accepted it and fell in love with it.

Okay. But I found that a set of Hakapolitas made it go in snow. I still own a set of chains for it that I never used.

Front wheel drive means nothing to me.

That link is for a CJ beater in PA. Not much of a road trip from York, about a hoagie and a sixer of Rolling Rock.

How cheap is cheap? There's dozens of XJ's for sale in Colorado, but decent ones don't sell cheap.

I did actually know a fellow, in the 1970's, who would buy his personal Volvos in Sweden and ship them back. Somehow he saved enough money to pay for his trips to Europe, perhaps by reselling them here.

I did something like that with a new Triumph motorcycle. Buying it "for export" in England made it exempt from their large sales tax. Riding it a while, then shipping it here as a "used" bike reduced the US import tax and sales taxes here. Cut about 30% off the overall purchase cost to me.

Well Doug, I tell ya. The wife's '99 is getting long in the tooth. She really likes it. We'd probably pay reasonable money for another '99 with no rust and in the 100k mile range. And not red.

As far as my beater, I'm very partial to the '95/'96 model years and not scared of 150k plus miles on one of those. For a beater even 200k wouldn't bother me. Rust is the issue in these parts so anything else is a relatively easy fix. You don't find much for 1500-2000 anymore but thats where I'd like to be for a beater. I am admittedly still stuck in the days when you could buy a running and inspected (until spring) beater for 5,6, 800 bucks. Those days are long gone apparently so, I guess I must adapt and realize the truth of my situation. :)

We can't get 2 Cherokees on Richs' trailer so might have to make 2 trips.:D

hee-hee-hee........ummm.....you mean anything with the jeep name on it.......running or not........uhhhhh.......1.....2....3,4......5.......ummmmm 6.........6.......no wait........7. Yep 7. And 2 Bantam trailers. How many run you ask? Errrrr...uhhhh 1......2......2 1/2. 2 1/2. A half because 1 runs with a jump start but isn't roadworthy. The '71 and the wife's '99 are the runners and the '95 Cherokee is the halfer.

    I've had my '71 since I was 19 or 20.

too bad we're on opposite ends... I've got a 02 Subie LL Bean with 350K I'd let go for cheap. Yes it still runs. AC is intermittent but heat works great. Great winter beater!
