What Year Speedometer Is This From?

registered as a 58, but I suspect it's earlier, like a 55 or 56, based on some of the stuff I'm seeing. Anyway, I'm completely re-doing the wiring, and I'm looking for replacement fuel and temp gauges, once I opened up the speedometer, I found that the replacement gauges I purchased don't fit, I suspect they are for a newer model speedometer.

Speedometer and odometer work just fine. but the electrical studs for the temp and fuel gauge disintegrated when I tried to remove the nuts from them.

Thanks! That adds up to what I've suspected. It has the cowl access panel, the snorkle cutout on the hood, front shackle reversal, and dualmatic hubs.

I'm glad the speedometer actually works though, because i like how it looks. Any idea if any new gauges would fit it? or is this somkething that probably won't happen? I don't mind running external gauges, but if I could get the built-in ones replaced, that would be sweet.

55 was a different one. Had a Willys script on it iirc.

Your Jeep sounds like it is a 55 or 56. If that speedometer is correct to it, then it would be a 56.

1956. Just like mine. Which originally sold and was registered as a '57.

Seems they were optimistic about speed of these things in 55, and more so in 56 :D

I think that was a selling gimmick across the industry at the time.

I recall as a little kid in the late Fifties, climbing into the front of a friend's dad's new car with some other kids.... "Look, the speedometer goes to 120!!!!" Now I shudder with horror to think of how those tuna-boats would have handled anything over 60mph. And no seat belts.

Yeah, I remember riding in a 63 Dodge when my friend's dad tried to see if it would go 120. I was in the back seat so don't know what registered on the speedometer, but it went fast enough for me.

The speedo in the first post is a King Seeley that was used in the early CJ5 for ‘56 and very early ‘57. These are 6 volt speedometers, and gauges only interchange with the King Seeley units.
In ‘57 Willys converted to 12v Stewart Warner speedos with the more common “0-9” black face/orange needle that was used up to ‘70 or ‘71.

    Wasn't six-volt/twelve volt optional for a time?
