Jeep M715 Borg Warner T98 Transmission

    "For divorced transfer case"

    Compatible for a CJ/Dana 18 application without alot of work?
    Found one locally, but know not what it is yet.
    Options and opinions welcome....

    Those are :poo: transmissions. T98 to D18 adapter is hard to get. Any normal input shaft is near impossible to find. They are good parts transmissions for T98s that were in CJ5s and other jeep applications. T18 parts do not swap into them.

    Agree. Avoid. Bad on both ends. Ok for a M715 but a cigar butt otherwise.

    Good if you need a few T98 internal gears/parts.
    But the maindrive and mainshaft are near worthless.

    Are you looking to swap one in?
    Years ago I did a T18 swap using the mainshaft and adapter from a Scout swapped into a Ford box. Both were easy to source and the swap was much cheaper than purchasing the kit from a vendor. If you can fall into either one of these for cheap/nothing, that might be a starting place.

    Possibly the "divorced transfer case" is the question?

    Not a very good picture, but this is it. The T-98 terminates like a 2WD transmission, and there is a short driveshaft that connects it to the transfer case. Not much value for our Jeeps, where there is no room for this config.

    The 226/230 has its own bell housing pattern, and does not match any other engines. IIRC Novak sells a plate adapter to mate this transmission to a Chevy, meant to replace the existing 230 in these trucks.

    Some '60s-70s light trucks (and maybe heavy trucks) used this config too - Ford, maybe Dodge. Needs a long wheelbase.

    I converted my old Vol. Fire Dept. M715 brush truck to Chevy (big block, later to small block) power, keeping the T98/divorced transfer case. I used an AA adapter, if memory serves, to adapt it to a cast Chevy bellhousing. There’s nothing wrong with an M715 T98, but it does not lend well for swaps without a LOT of work and money, especially for small Jeeps.
    The input/main drive gear is a unique length that the adapter plate made usable with the Chevy bellhousing. Then the mainshaft out the back of the transmission is set up as a 2WD trans would use to connect to a driveshaft. Both these shafts, at minimum, need to be swapped out (unless you use an adapter up front) not counting an adapter plate between the trans and TC. It can be done, but at a lot of expense.
