Camshaft Button Oddfire

    The Jeep manual shows a camshaft button on the end of the spring (see pix). Mine didn't have one. Was it eliminated and just the folded over last coil served the purpose?

    No the plastic cap probably busted up and got caught in the oil pickup screen. Some of the engine don’t have one for some reason but if you have a spring you had the button at one time.

    This engine has had a rebuild at some point and not a very good one. I bet they just left it out. I don't suppose these are available anymore.

    Looks like TA doesn't have it anymore. I did find a drawing of it in this forum. Do you think a 3D printed part would hold up?

    I wouldn't worry about it. Mine doesn't have one (although I can hardly claim that the motor hasn't ever been opened up before I got there), but Cam Buttons really don't *do* much of anything on Front Distributor designs, as the distributor drive is pushing the cam away slightly from the front cam retainer, as opposed to Rear Distributor, where most of the Distributor Drives have their gear teeth cut in such a manner, where it's constantly trying to shove the camshaft out through the timing cover.

    That's how I understand the issue anyway. It's entirely possible that I've got some of the details wrong, I'm hardly an engineer.

    Wow that drawing is still around, I made that drawing probably 15-17 years ago. Not sure a printed one would work (oil and heat), I made mine out of phenolic.
