This is copied from Herm's site:

The first Overdrives were built as a front shift (shift shaft comes out to the front of the OD) and were built as 26 tooth units. The 29 tooth came next, also with the front shift. When Dana-Spicer changed the casting of the dana 18 t/f case the front shift shaft would no longer clear the dana 18 case. Warn redesigned the shifting mechanism and designed a rear shift. This rear shift was then used on all 26 and 29 tooth OD’s that were built.

Does anyone know when Spicer changed the casting of the D18, and thus the rear shift for the OD is required...thanks!

The v6 castings and dana 20 that has a larger body won't clear the front shift. I believe your wagon is good but the cj is not.

This. The large hole D18 requires a rear shift OD.

okay - didn't connect casting change to the large hole/small hole change...thanks
So what happens when you mate a small hole D18 to an sm465....will the sm465 get in the way of a front shift OD?

The dana 18 is deep enough that the transmission won't interfere with the shifter but the linkage will need a long ear to drop down.

Check out these drivelines with the different overdrives and how the rod attaches.

Here is the set-up....the front shift should work...but going to have to get creative bending the lower/horizontal portion of the shift linkage...

Yes front shift warm should work fine with this transfer case and your linkage including the lever pivot bracket must be custom made anyway because of Synchro Mesh transmission.
