Radiator Overflow Tank ??

Trying to figure out how/where to position a new over flow tank for my V6. Is the height in relation to the radiator a major consideration? It would be easy to mount the tank low on the fender but it would be near or even slightly below the bottom of the radiator?

    Thanks for your help.

Low is ok but higher is better.

The biggest issue I see is having more volume in tubing than expansion in the system. If you have more tubing than the system cycles back and forth it won't "pump" the air out and draw in coolant from the tank.

I know on mine the overflow is not large enough with the 2nd heater loop and early 4.3 block with straight walls, it will push all the coolant out of the overflow and pull in air.

The one I have in the B is probably most of a foot lower than the top of the radiator. It functions fine.

The top of mine is mounted about flush with the top of the radiator. Works great. Sorry for the sideways picture.

Mine is mounted low on the fender.
You can see it here on the right fender.

Yes, that is the one I bought.
The challenge is if I want to mount it somewhat vertical it will need to be low on the fender. I could make some sheet metal bracketry and mount it level with the top of radiator if that was important. Still considering options but want to get this done in the next week or so.

I just used a piece of PVC. Works well for me.

I mounted that bottle on a bracket next to my radiator in my J10's engine compartment, Granted, there's a lot more room under a J-truck hood than a CJ.

Made this mounting bracket more than 40 years ago. Still going strong! Takes up a lot of fender space though.

    Probably a redundant comment,
don't forget to insure you have the proper radiator cap for the recovery tank. Early caps only have an inner seal. Later models have a gasket both in the neck and around the top of the neck.

I am not knocking having recovery tanks but am curious as to why they seem to be so popular on Jeeps that didn't originally have one? Is it mainly for the ability to be sure of proper coolant level while the system is warm?

I run one because it's cheap, and keeps it from puking a toxic fluid all over the ground, if it overheats. Nothing more complicated than that. Same reason I've never left road draft tubes on anything I've had, that had them, and replaced them with PCV setups.

That's sound reasoning. (y) Do you use it for checking the coolant level too, or keep the radiator level normal and pop the cap to check it?

Mine came out of an 1990's era Dodge truck, it fit in nicely and works well.

I like them because, if properly installed, you purge all the air out of the system.

I , Myself , do a good amount of shop idling & tuning . I didn't want mine Piss'n on the ground & our Doggie gett'n into it.

Also, it's a Coolant Recovery tank...... when the radiator cools down , it draws the coolant back to top itself off. Kinda like automatic like & much less chance of ' Steaming ' oneself by tak'n a cap off'n a hot Radiator .:whistle:
