Replacement V6 Accelerator Pedal Rod Boot

Uncle Vin asked me awhile back if I knew of a source for a replacement rubber boot for the V6 accelerator pedal rod. Mine was long gone by the time I got my CJ, and I wasn't even sure what the original boot looked like. He sent the following photos of his.








Update: I found these photos in my files of an NOS example of the original boot.






I wasn't able to locate a source for a direct replacement for the OEM boot, which I believe was Jeep part number 941365. Uncle Vin and I both checked around online to see what might be available as far as other automotive boots that might be made to work. I looked at several dozen on eBay, and did find a few boots intended for various uses on other vehicles which could possibly be modified to fit, but none that I'm sure would work.

However, I checked McMaster Carr today and found a "Round Bellows" that appears to be a fairly close match to the OEM boot. It's a good bit longer than the original, but still looks like it would fit.

Please reply if you happen to know of a better solution, or a source for reproductions of the original boot.

The rod is mostly moving side to side in that location so I feel like the rod clearance on the bellows is not enough and will tear.

 

The one in snowshoe is also torn. I have been wanting to replace it as well.

 

Mmm. I would look for something from a Chevy or Ford that I could make work. If you search, there are lots of possibilities -

clutch rod boot - Search ... you could also try "pedal rod boot" and similar searches.

Suspect you're going to have to buy a few likely examples and see how it goes. Your contribution to the cause ...

 

I wonder if a call to summitracing or jcwhitney with a sales rep could get a good sample assortment. Or they find a proper replacement.
I wish I had the time for the legwork but I am interested in a replacement.

Yeah, that's exactly the process I've been going through in evaluating them online. I think you're correct though that after weeding out the ones that are too large or too small to fit, "buy and test" experimentation is going to be the only way to assess the remainder very well.

 

That's the one for the 4 cyl. models....the V6's have a completely different accelerator pedal setup.

Lockman, it turns out you may actually have hit on the answer....or at least a good one. Check out this post from 2010 showing how to modify a 4 cyl. boot for the V6 pedal linkage:

The rod on the earlier (1966-'68) V6 hanging pedal setup is a bit different, but it looks like this solution would still work.

I finally got this done today using the solution shown in the link in my last post above, with a modified accelerator boot for an MB / M38 / M38A1.

My '67 has the early (1966-'68) hanging pedal setup. Though I thought I might have to, I didn't need to remove the pedal shaft to get the boot in. I was able to just loosen up the three firewall bolts enough to work the flat skirt of the modified boot in between the firewall panel and the hinge plate, then retighten them.
