Fitech Efi Install

    Installed a FiTech EFI system for my V-6 Jeep. After some research decided to go with FiTech, as there system will work with the odd fire, as long as you have a HEI Distributor with a square wave signal. Had to buy a adapter plate to bolt the FiTech to my manifold. Got a adapter plate off of EBay. The install was easy, one of the biggest issue was dealing with the length of the wires on the wiring harness.

    I installed a FiTech Force Fuel, this is a 1/2 gallon tank I attached to the firewall next to the brake power booster. Fuel is pumped to this tank and tank has a fuel pump in it that boost the pressure to 58psi. for the EFI, there is a return fuel outlet on the Force Fuel. I did not want to have high pressure fuel lines under the Jeep, so this is why I went with the Force Fuel.

    I have driven the Jeep just around the neighbor, not much. Need to get the front end aligned. When taking off from a dead stop, I would see black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. I talked to FiTech and adjusted the AFR at idle and this helped a lot. The Jeep is driving much better than the carburetor that was on it.

    Got the engine idle set at 725 and it has a smooth idle. The hand held shows the RPM jumping up and down, yet the idle is smooth. Talked to a FiTech tech about this and he said that the ECU looks at the RPM and there is a fast processor that adjust everything. (I am not very technical). The RPM gauge in my cluster has a needle and this stays steady.

    What little I have drove the Jeep I am very happy with the way it runs. Will need to adjust the EFI in the future, but per FiTech, when a adjustment is made, you need to drive it for a while and make another adjustment. Do not make several adjustments at one time.

    No crank trigger? Just the tach output of the HEI ?

    The EFI is FiTech #39001, this is a two barrel TB.

    The Force Fuel is FiTech # 50004, They just came out with a smaller Fuel Force, about half the size. Would make mounting easier.

    I think I ordered each part separate, no kit.

    Yes, I'm real interested in results on this system. Been waiting a few years for a EFI system that runs out of the box for the oddfire.

    What little that I have drove it, I am very happy with it. The RPM on the handheld jumps around but it idles fine. Does nut rev up and down. Winter time is starting, do not know how much more I will be driving it. The ECU does not start learning till the engine reaches 170 degrees. Since our weather is moving into fall and things are cooling down the engine temp is running about 165, not heating to that 170. The heater in the Jeep is working as a second radiator, need to deal with this. Still got a little rich fuel mixture at idle. Need to adjust AFV at idle but need to drive it a little more. Another issue is when our RV is parked at the house, it blocks the door to the Jeep garage, so it is stuck inside.

    Steve do you think it was worth the money spent to improve on the 2G ? I've been wanting to upgrade to FI but its hard to get good analysis when there is little info out there on the odd-fire. I have several Dauntless engines and am planning upgrading to FI on at least two of them, but want two of the same to help with the pain of setting them up and keeping them adjusted.

    I am by no means an expert. In my understanding the RPMs on a Dauntless are always going to bounce around on a handheld or timing light without feeding the computer an even prm signal from either A) a mechanical rotating trigger/sensor combo on the crankshaft or distributor, or B) some type of electronic filter to convert the un-even signal to an even signal. If you can adjust the target idle speed in the EFI's ECU to a value that is lower than what you want, this should stop the idle air control valve from rapidly opening and closing that makes the engine hunt for idle.

    Also, I feel your winter pain - I live at 6,000 feet and my garage lacks insulation....so it's very cold!

    Note these are two different things. Your timing light is only hooked to one cylinder and it fires exactly once every two rotations of the crankshaft at the same timing. If it's bouncing around, it means your mechanical/vacuum advance is doing something or the distributor has a problem.

    The ECU however, is seeing a signal from all the cylinders. So in two full revolutions it sees pulses in the following degree increments: 150-90-150-90-150-90. Since the ECU is expecting evenly spaced spark events, it thinks the engine is turning slower at the 150 degree intervals and faster at the 90 degree intervals. The engine may or may not idle poorly depending on how the ECU reacts to the unevenly spaced signal. If it reacts slowly enough not to adjust idle speed or fueling due to the perceived engine speed changes it could run fine. It would depend on the ECU and it's programming.

    Talked to FITech and they said they would customize the software for an odd fire for free and email it for you to put on your unit. They said all they need to know is the firing angles (90 and 150 fixed, thanks Fireball!)

    90 and 150. It's fantastic they'll program it for odd fire.

    I could not get a carburetor to work for me, bought a rebuilt one and it did not work. I rebuilt one and it did not work. Explored the EFI and went that way. Fitech said it would work with the odd fire. Jeep is running good, so I guess money well spent.

    I also like the Force Fuel, you could run a fuel line from your mechanical fuel pump to the force fuel and be done. The Force Fuel has a return fuel line on it.
