1972 Jeep Cj5 Exhaust

    When doing my restore of my 1972 Jeep CJ5 304 v8, the original exhaust manifolds had been broken and re-welded in multiple spots so I just threw them away as they were beyond help. So I went with Hedman fender well headers and thrush mufflers. I might have liked this 50 years ago, but this thing is loud enough that people in the neighborhood cannot have a conversation until I am gone. I know, what was I thinking or expect!!

    I am leaning towards purchasing all new exhaust manifolds and taking to a quality muffler shop and get a dual exhaust exit at rear exhaust put on. I don't mind a rumble etc, so I am thinking of the proflow 40 or 42 series muffler. Just wondering what others have done on their V8's and like the way it turned out sound and fit wise.

    I could stay with the headers and utilize the 31/2" collectors to muffler which would save about $325.00 in manifolds but want rear exit instead of in front of rear wheels.

    patriot clipster shorty headers. 2 1/2 dual pipes to jones extreme flow mufflers . 2 1/2 dual tailpipes out the rear corners. the jones mufflers are like flowmasters but round. its tight by the transfer case and getting over the rear axle. it rumbles decent. really sings over thirty five hundred rpms

    I think iron manifolds are best for a Jeep. They are strong, durable, cool, don't leak and are quiet. They are not the best for performance, but pre-80 AMC factory exhaust manifolds are quite good for iron manifolds.

    JMO - I would go quiet, with whatever my muffler shop recommended. My CJ-6 has a muffler shop exhaust that has been on the Jeep since I've owned it. Looks like the exhaust pipe is made from roll bar tubing - very sturdy.

    I'll be installing a 304 in place of the 258 in my 74 cj6 eventually. I always have a tough time choosing between spending the money on a Waldons exhaust or a custom shop. Last custom shop job on my 46 with a swapped 4.3 was a nightmare. Cracked twice at the Y pipe and not happy with quality . But I don't have the iron stock manifolds.

    It will depend on what kind of muffler you have put. There is louder muffler than other. I run magnaflow on my 5.3 ls engine with fenderwell headers, i can barely hear the exhauts at idle. When cruising at 2200-2300 rpm i hear more my tire than the exhauts.

    But when i go WOT it make just a nice roar.
     
  7. I love my Patriot shorty ceramic coated headers. I was a bit nervous that they would be loud but they are very very slimilar to how the stock iron manifolds sounded….

    When I had my 74 I always planned on doing an exhaust shop system with the y pipe single rear corner exit with maybe a 40 series muffler for “grandpa loud “. The driving force was simple and tucked up away from rocks and such. Use should definitely help decide which direction to go.
