I’m trying to replace the inner axle diff oil seals inside the diff on the front axle of my 1972 cj5 Dana 30 (at least I assume it is a D30, starting to wonder now). All the ones that I keep finding on line that say they will work look different. Went ahead and ordered what was described to fit anyway. Got one today in the mail but it has a flanged area whereas the original on mine doesn’t. If it didn’t have this flanged area it would fit in and work. (Pics attached of original and what I received). Seems like the flanged area is built into the inside of my tubes and just a traditional looking oil seal is needed when looking at what came out. Can anyone help point me to the right part? Am I missing something here?

That flange is supposed to guide the axle shaft through the seal when you re-install it.

Thanks. I see the function part, but only a standard looking seal popped out. It’s in the pic on the right. I can’t get the new one with the flange to go in there. The remaining hole is too small. When I feel in there, it is like a flange is already in there to guide the axle in the tube if you follow what I’m saying.

With a fresh set of eyes this am, what I believe has happened after studying the new part is that when I pryed them out, all that came out was the rubber interior portion of the old seal and the rest must still be in there and has become one with the axle tube. Maybe I’ll try to get something long to get on the lip of them some how and tap them out.

Suggest a slide hammer with a long extension and hook on the end.
