Willys/early Cj-5 Drop-down Spare Tire Carrier

Have any of you ever seen one of these? It is a drop-down tire carrier for a Willys/Early CJ-5 that mounts to the lower set of the middle drawbar bolts, the ones in the body cutout. I have been looking for a way to mount a spare to my Early 5 with a fiberglass body and this will work great, especially since it was given to me for free! It came in on what was left of a 3B that my friend dragged home. Did some researching, but none of the old brands (Kayline, etc.) seem to have anything like this. I thought about that as well, and your point is well-taken. What may not be obvious is that the top mount pivots like the bottom mount. I think there would be enough play without being rattley. Really the top mount is just holding it vertically and is significantly lighter weight material, all weight is on the bottom. Also, my fiberglass has the 1 inch thick reinforced tailgate area that you could cut out a tailgate, but mine is not cut out. All things to ponder, I guess.

 

If there is no tailgate is there any reason to hinge it? I just solid mounted the one I built for my 3B (also a glass tub) off my reconstructed pintle hitch mount. I did run a brace through the rear of the tub to tie it into the roll bar.




It obviously depends on one's use, but I have never missed having a tailgate in my 3B.

 

Nope, no reason for it to be hinged, other than wanting to use this cool vintage part, although I have no idea what it is, have never seen one like it. Thought maybe one of you has seen one before.

 

Early Scouts used some that look similar to your.
Could it be off a Scout 800 or modified from that to fit a Jeep ?

 

As far as body to frame, the late '70 jeeps and and '71s (i.e. rear fuel tank) came with the body tied to the pintle hitch holes from the factory. The rear fuel tank required deleting the hitch bracing that tied to the frame, so the engineers added weld nuts to the under side of the bed floor and anchored the hitch bolts there.

Anyway I made my own drop down tire carrier using the same holes as came from the factory knowing that if it hadn't caused any problems since April 71, I am probably okay to replicate the factory design.

I got the plans of the internet a few years ago. I can't find the link, but I have a hard copy somewhere. I will see if I can find it and post a pic. This picture was when I was putting it together. The key parts are the gate hinges at the bottom.

 

I honestly have no idea, it may have come off a Scout originally, or it may be custom, but the way some of the pieces are cut, like the pivot on the bottom, it is very nicely made. It was on a B, but clearly aftermarket for the Jeep. Still no sure answers. Thought you guys would find it interesting.

Well, it came to my buddy on a 3b, and the holes line up, I’m calling it a Jeep carrier. But most importantly, I kinda like it! I’m using it anyway. My Jeep is by no means a restoration, but a hodgepodge of parts I like. Like the glass body and the 71 renegade slots on a ‘59.

Googled scout spare tire carrier, lots of photos of it.

Nope, I like this piece too much to sell it, going on the shelf of projects fo my Jeeps. Now I have to find another Renegade Slot rim for the spare!

The solid back panel CJ-5s came with the M38A1 mount that attaches to the body. You can buy this mount easily.
Spare Tire Carrier Mounting Bracket Fits 52-66 M38A1 There are also used ones available for less money.

With a fiberglass tub, I would be reluctant to mount directly on the tub. Maybe a rigid mount on the frame makes more sense?

 

yeah, figure out some other kind of mount, and give me that.
i could use some kind of spare mount that lets me use the tailgate.
