This implies that the Holley ECU might work with the odd-fire tach signal?

Electronically I think it would not be hard to do, if they planned for it.

FYI I called Holley again on lunch break today to dig a little deeper into this with some specific questions and I got a "there is just no way to get our Sniper system to talk to an odd-fire engine." I specifically asked about installing a crank sensor and was still told a "hard no." So........

Right? All this stuff is expensive!

I suspect the uneven signal would trick the ecu into thinking the engine was constantly speeding up & slowing down causing the mixture to constantly hiccup.

So can someone explain why the Howell EFI system apparently would work but the Holley one will not? Is it because the Howell system has a sensor that can read off of vacuum advance?

There literally covering their butt because they have never tried it. The link I posted above, call these guys and actually ask if the have done this. They say in their ad you need an HEI but they actually advertise this system for Jeep/Buick odd fire v6.

I've got a call into Ryan @ BJs, will see what he says tomorrow and report back.

When I was looking for the EFI for my Jeep. Emailed Holley and the said the ECU will not read the tach signal. So it will not work.

You are looking at a 2 bbl and 4 bbl TB. What intake manifold do you have on your engine? Putting a 4 bbl TB on a 2bbl intake might not work.

Steve what HEI unit do you have?

I put all the conversations I had with Holley in the other thread. I was looking into it at the same time Steve was for his setup.

I truly believe it comes down to the ECU they use is setup to control spark too. While it may not be implemented in this unit, the odd pulses would register and cause issues.

The other units DON'T have this in the ECU, so the pulse from the strong HEI system allows them to work fine.

    Thanks @Warloch.

Ryan at BJs had this to say (I told him a tech @ Holley told me the Sniper won't work with an odd fire V6):

Holley means their Sniper won’t integrate with timing control. You simply install our DUI distributor DUI HEI Distributor Buick Dauntless Odd-Fire 225 V6 USA Made! and then set timing like you normally would. Everything will work properly other than the sniper won’t control timing. Yes, our distributor has a connection for the tach signal, which you can then use as a signal to the sniper. But again, it doesn’t integrate with / control timing on the 225.

He said they have sold 40-50 of them this year. I'd love to find out who a few of those folks are and ask them how they are getting on with it. And ask them how a $400 distributor works!

Make him a deal - if it works, fine, if not, he pays for the Sniper System.... All the systems I've worked with or installed have HEI. All required a 'filter' to be put in the tach signal. None of them are trying to do anything with spark signal... I'm not willing to buy a product that a manufacture says won't work and so I'm screwed if I try it and want to return it.

I'd love to find out what he puts in his HEI Distributor that makes it a $400 setup... The last HEI for the 225 I built with 'new' parts was @ $125.

The DUI distributors for a Buick V6 use a new housing that's taller, to eliminate the clearance issues with the OEM units.

If your spinning your dauntless high enough RPM to need anything more than a OEM oddfire HEI..... you will be looking for your next dauntless engine.
There is no reason to buy the DUI setup unless you just gotta have the new taller body distributor.

Looked at the DUI distributor. Looked at the second picture in the link. They put # 1 at a different location than the Buick HEI I have, if that means anything.

DUI HEI Distributor Buick Dauntless Odd-Fire 225 V6 USA Made!

When looking for my EFI system, I emailed Holley tech, here is the conversation.

Steve "Looking at your Holley Sniper 2 Barrel small bore. I have a Buick odd-fire engine. For RPM, will the Sniper read a Square Edge Wave signal from GM HEI Distributor"

Holley " It can read a signal from the HEI but it will not read an odd-fire signal. You would need something to create an even fire RPM signal."

Steve "If I was to use a Holley part# 554-124 and attached a metal piece to the crank. Will the Holley part # 544-124 send a good RPM signal to the ECU for RPM, if there is a way that the ECU can accept the signal."

Holley "Yes, folks have done that and similar magnetic crank trigger system."

Hmmm, it took me probably 30 minutes with a dremel (Offy intake) and an Allen head bolt for the manifold. But I get your point.
