First time posting a tech question in a while. I’m visiting my dads place in AZ this week and he has a mint 77 that would not start when I got here. I rebuilt the carter YF carb earlier this week and it fired right up. Once it ran for about 2-3 mins gas started leaking out the bottom of the accelerator pump lifter linkage arm. Took it all apart and noticed the gasket for that linkage arm was cracked. Fixed that, verified float adjustment and put it back together. Now it won’t start at all again unless I pour gas down the carb then it shuts down after it uses up that gas. I’m so damn frustrated right now. Any thoughts? It’s got the 258 BTW.

Float stuck down? Happens. Float/needle can be fiddly. Tap firmly on the side of the bowl with a plastic hammer. If that does not help, pull top and look in bowl.

Suspect your gas-pouring-out problem was from the float stuck open. Pretty sure you don't need the lifter link seal for the carb to run. IIRC it keeps dirt out and bowl splash in, but the float level should be below it.

It's probably the float like Timgr says, but If it's been sitting a while, debris from the gas tank could have plugged the fuel filter while it was briefly running.

The linkage is just where they leak when they flood for some other reason.

Thanks guys. Float was sticking I think. Took it apart again and checked everything. She is firing up and running right. Just a little rich
