It's a good idea to seal around and under your stainless as well as being aware of the alloy you are using. 316 has pretty good resistance compared to things like 304,
Quoting a friend years ago "It's stain-less not stain-not."
Crevice corrosion is the danger with stainless. I've had parts that looked pretty healthy just come away with very little force. Plus stainless work-hardens, getting more brittle with any bending forces.

Also worth considering that stainless hardware varies greatly in strength and can be weaker than grade 2, usually it's weaker than grade 5. Since markings vary it's not as uniform as steel bolts. might be worth buying from a marine store rather than Lowes, etc. unless you know the alloy.
I don't want to rain on any parades, I suspect any old stainless will likely survive OK on a Jeep, but it is true that carbon steel bolts are likely to be much stronger which might have safety implications.

 

I used a plasma cutter and cut the heads off the bolts that wouldn't come out, which was most of them 44 years of corrosion wasn't kind.

 

I was thinking the same thing downs, teletech.... Go overkill first. Imagine I'd be dead if it failed again. Thx for the advice guys

 

So I'm tackling the tub next week....I'm worried about the steering column and pedals.....Everything else seems self-explanatory...I see some people left the column and finagled the wheel through the transmission holes...Does this work? How about the pedals....do they need to come out or will it finagle out. Looking for all kinds of advice. The unknowns worry me though the task of removing the tub does not...anything can be tackled. Just like to know those pitfalls ahead of time that people have fallen into.

 

I used my engine hoist. Picked it up from the side.

 

The pedals are usually really easy to remove so there is no compelling argument for not doing so. One bolt for the clutch and brake pedals.
I'd remove the steering box. If it's an original Ross box the odds are very high the steering wheel has welded itself to the splines and you don't want to damage the wheel pulling it off. Besides, if it's a Ross box then it likely needs seals and service.

 

Dumb question??? How will I know if it's a Ross box...Keep reading that...

 

If the steering box is original, then it's a Ross.
It will have a solid tube from the steering wheel down to the box and then the box will push/pull a link rod that runs forward to the bellcrank mounted under the radiator.
If the steering box is located up near the grill, then someone has converted to a Saganaw box or similar.
