I just went through the whole thread You're Mr. Incredible!

 

I mounted an old motorcycle ramp to the rear bumper to hold some firewood and a bin to house all the stuff I don’t want to store in the RV. Gas, antifreeze, fluids, seat covers, rags, extra air hose, straps, spare parts.... The bin got bolted down through the inside.



And since the lockable Rubbermaid Action Packer totes are as expensive as lumber anymore, I went with a 20 gallon Craftsman latching bin from Lowe’s for $20.
I drilled a 1/2” hole through the latches and ran a 1/8” x 1/2” length of aluminum through the top with a small padlock. It won’t keep everyone out, but it should keep the opportunists at bay.

I have read that. I hope it’s not an issue. It’s like a hot poker through the heart to pay $5 for 3 pieces of bundled wood on-site. Maybe I’ll sew a cover for it.

I was thinking a vinyl cover for it...... If a piece of firewood came out on the highway and damaged the Varg......
It would feel similar to that first big dent I got on my jeep on the Rubicon.....

 

It may be different in the western states but I have had the rangers ask to prove the firewood we have has been heat treated. In the Great Smokey Mountains Nat Park they are very strict about you bringing any wood into the park unless it has a sealed and stamped paper on the bundle. Very stiff fines if you get caught with undocumented fire wood.

 

Unless the rules have changed. If you are registered to camp for the night at one of the in park campgrounds you may collect dead and down wood for campfires within the park boundaries.

 

It's an invasive species thing. We now have emerald ash borer in our county. We are not allowed to move wood outside our county. It will eventually spread, but I abide by the rules as these are devastating many areas.

 

The pine bark beetles are doing a number on the pines on my property....

 

Been camping in state parks around Kentucky, always see people bringing in there own firewood. I would make a cover to go over it, will keep it dry and help secure it during travels.

 

We packed up Saturday morning for a few-day trip in the mountains.



The plan was Sat/Sun/Mon, but half way there I remembered I had a dentist appointment Monday morning, and my wife was supposed to meet with a prospective employer (old friend). Hers could be pushed off, but mine couldn’t. We decided to play it by ear, if we wanted to head back Sunday night, or early Monday morning.

Our goal was to head up about 20 miles past our usual spot, on the other side of the fires near the ID/MT border. When we were getting close to the fire zone, the main road was closed, but we spoke to the guard at the closure to let him know we were passing straight through and he let us pass. The fires and crews were working right up to the road’s edge, and the smoke was bad.

We found a great spot to set up camp. On the NFS topo map, it is named as a town of “Littlefield,” but IRL, it’s just an open field that goes up to the bank of Prichard Creek. The camper parked in this Google Earth screenshot is exactly where we were parked.



A quick google search found this photo of an old gold mining operation there from 1890. Crazy!





We took the scooters in-tow so we could run into the nearby town of Murray for dinner, and run up to the top of Thompson Pass to do some hiking on Sunday into Revett Lake.

@colojeepguy , I was thinking of this quote on Saturday night.

We have badminton birdies that have an LED light in them, and it’s a blast to play at night. We were playing by the RV at sunset and could barely see the moon through the trees, so we walked up to the road to see it better. We started playing on the road, and we never had to move for a single car for over an hour an a half while we played.

Our youngest went swimming. I would’ve jumped in too if I’d brought different shoes. The rocks are sharp as glass, and that’s a long hike in wet shoes.

The drive out was both beautiful and eerie through the Character Complex fire. A few of the mountains were just covered in flames, and others were dotted with small fires and hot spots from blazes that peaked weeks ago.

The RV took about $100 in gas, but the memories we made… It was an awesome weekend.

We took the RV up to our new favorite camping spot again this past weekend. The fires are almost out, the temps dropped down to near freezing at night, and the fog was heavy in the mornings. Fire restrictions were lifted on Friday, so we were able to have a campfire. I used my XR to drag firewood back to camp.



This time we took a longer hike on the Montana side of the border into Blossom Lake. The hike itself was less scenic, and everybody and their brother decided to hike it too. I don’t like seeing other people when I’m out in the woods. It must’ve recently been featured in a magazine or something. I’ve never seen more than 2 or three cars parked at the trailhead, and there were upwards of 20 when we got back.
