Wrong Windshield Seal?

    Hey all,
Trying to install new glass in a 74 windshield frame.
The glass I bought has about 1/4 gap between the outside edge of the glass and the inside edge of the frame. Is that too much of a gap? Didn't work with the seal that I bought, gaps all over the place.

I found a different seal that's not one continous piece like the one I have, and it has a lock strip. It's the third one on this page: 1974 JEEP CJ5 5.0L 304cid V8 Windshield Molding / Seal | RockAuto

Is that the right one? Trying to figure this out.

    Thanx for your help!

The glass is smaller than the opening the rubber fills the gap. I prefer one pc seals.

The 74 uses the 2 piece seal. It is a strip that is worked around the glass and frame with a locking strip that is installed after the fact. With 1/4" of space on either side of the glass, you should not have too much trouble getting it in. The locking strip goes on the OUTSIDE of the windshield frame.

Perfect!! Thanx so much. Just to clarify, 1/4 inch gap all the way around, or just on the sides?

This is what I have with my current glass.
Looks like a 1/4 inch all the way around:

I recently had the windshield replaced on my '75. The gap in the molding with the locking filler strip goes all the way around the windshield.

Yes, 1/4 inch all the way around should be good, otherwise you will never get the windshield in.

If you have to cut the seal length to fit, be careful. The same kind came with my new windshield and after measuring it carefully and installing the windshield I was left with a 1/4” gap. I made sure the locking strip bridged the area but it was so much trouble to put in I went with it and filled with caulk. Hope your’s goes better!

same happened to me I just cut a section of the old seal and filled the gap with that. its like you wont know the final size so I would say cut it about 3/8 long after you think it fits.

When you push the glass in it squeezes the seal into the groove I add 1/2 and trim from there.
