Under Seat Tank Sending Unit Wiring

Hi all, I just rewired the new dash in the 67 CJ5 V6. I now need to run the fuel tank sending wire to the fuel gauge. Should I be running the wire along the inside of the tub and up behind the dash or is the correct routing down through and underneath the tub along the frame and up through the back of the firewall? I attached a pic of the dash for your viewing pleasure!

MP67CJ5, you may also want to run another wire attached to the bolt circle of the sending unit along the same route, and ground it somewhere behind the dash. As I learned from this forum, the lack of a good ground to the sending unit / gas tank will cause the fuel gauge not to work properly, but this simple solution solves that problem.

 

To add to Fino's response, yes the wire runs in a loom up under the door body edge and curves up about 3"-4" at the forward vertical post where the reinforcement is. Some of the reinforcement channels have a hole for the wire/loom to run through on its way to up behind the dashboard. There may still be bent tabs under the door opening edge used to hold the loom up in the recess.

I'm about to do this same thing as well. Just wanted to have a quick sanity check here as there's no evidence of a wire ever having been installed on my old tank/dash: the wire(s) attach to the center bolt on the top of the sending unit, correct?

 

Correct. The sending unit wire goes from the center screw on the sending unit to the fuel gauge, and then ideally you would run a dedicated ground wire. The ground can go from one of the 6 mounting screws on the sending unit to the bolt that holds the tank strap to the tub.

You might want to run a ground wire to the sending unit.
