I found a drawing online of an 8274 but I want to confirm. Is the front to back (depth?) 8.5"? I need to make sure I leave room for a winch; more importantly the drum has the clearance without interfering with the frame or grill.

    I went and measured one. It’s 8.5”.

What happens if you later decide to go with a little bigger winch?

I cannot image any situation where an 8274 would not be able to handle a Willys Jeep. I have one on my 3-1/4 ton Frontier (yes, I've scaled it) and it does amazing work on the trail pulling mine (once in a while) and others (a more frequent occurrence). If there ever was such a situation you can update a stock one with the motor to the 6.0Hp from the 9.5XP, go to dual motors (yes, they have those gearboxes now), etc. The 8274 really can't be beat for a lighter vehicle.

ETA: Then I go catch up in my email and read this.
Warn upgrades the classic 8274 winch from 8,000 to 10,000 pounds

If I ever upgraded it'd be a pto winch. I doubt that'll ever happen though. An old warn should do me fine.
