    Hey Guys.
Restoration project. '74 CJ5. I think PO replaced the tank. Was the factory gas tank bare aluminum or black chassi paint? if anyone has a stock pic pass along. Thanks.

IIRC my '73 in 1973 was galvanized. I worked in a Jeep dealer parts department in the '70s, and I recall all the factory gas tanks were galvanized.

Thanks Tim... Much appreciated. I assumed galvanized, since most of the stock pics found online showed gray. But great to have a Jeep parts guy confirm :) . Weekend project get all the frame brackets, new lines, misc frame stuff back on, and then drop in the gas tank, and hang the axles....rolling chassi once again! Glad no paint, since I really didn't want to set up my paint tent again!

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    What Tim says.
Every tank I saw galvanized as well.
Only aftermarket tanks were painted black that I recall.

Possible that technology has changed since then. Aluminized steel is now a common material for things like this. Corrosion resistant and cheaper than stainless; likely cheaper than galvy too. Possible they paint them now because the edges would rust without paint?
