134f, Carter Yf, Won't Idle Smooth, Wants To Hunt?

    A Solex won't last as long as a Carter but generally is ok for awhile as you mentioned.

    One issue you can get into when moving a carb to a different sized motor is when you adjust the throttle plate for the proper idle speed, it's not longer in the right place to interact with the idle circuit ports properly.

    If you have to close the plates more, then they can end up under or blocking the idle circuit holes. Then the idle circuit doesn't get a proper vacuum signal. Not sure how you would fix that.

    I replaced a tired YF with a new Solex. After adjusting the idle and accelerator pump (basically allowing it to actually function, it was all but disabled) the same FHead ran better than any I've owned. I got nothing but good things to say about em.

    IMO a new Solex >>>> a tired Carter anyday

    I bought an engine with a solex on it 23 years ago, put the whole mess in my 3b, I’ve done nothing to the carb, still running great.

    The yf is getting worse! The kids drive it every weekend on farm to our bon fire spot.
    It's smoking now and smells rich!
    I'd really like to know what happened? Maybe a crack somewhere?
    But when u drive it like u stole it, it runs great !
    I've rechecked all vacuum lines and gaskets.

    Maybe the float needs adjusting? Maybe the needle is sticking?

    Comparing a new solex to a worn YF isnt quite fair, IMHO.

    But one thing that a worn YF can have problems with is air leaks at the throttle shaft, which could spoil your idle when the throttle plate is shut.

    They can be re-bushed.

    While it is true that the comparison is unfair, assuming a rebushed Carter will be remotely as good as new is also an assumption that I’ve seen not pan out.

    To me it would come down to how much pure originality is important to you vs clocking useful hours. If use is more important then IMO get the Solex. You have XP with em personally. If originality is important than have the Carter rebuilt by a pro with xp in this specific carb.

    I think Glenn is on to something, maybe the float needle is not seating, dirt or whatever in the needle making it flood? Just something to look at. May check the float level? Good Luck.
