A Full Restoration Of My 1969 Cj5 With The Dauntless

There is/was a long thread on the forum about matching the engine color on the Dauntless. It is a old thread. Did a little searching and could not find it.

 

Yes there was. It was decided that Honda Hampstead Green was the closest match... That's what I used.... If you search for Hampstead Green on the site a whole bunch of threads come up...

 

I know Rubicloak had some custom mixed for his Renegade restoration. It looks perfect. He could probably give you the codes to mix another batch.

 

You've done a great job on this build so far! I really like your innovative wooden jigs and fixtures. I think I'm going to copy your rotisserie design, as I have lots of lumber, but not much steel.

Seem to be on the upswing from being sick. Last night I started the final sanding the high build primer for basecoat/clearcoat. A few spots that need some spot touch up with epoxy primer where I broke thru to metal, but that's normal. The light gray is the high build, the darker gray is where I broke through to epoxy primer. The black stuff you see is a dry guide coat product made by Mirka. I love that stuff! No paint compatibility vs spray can junk, it hides in every tiny defect, and can be sanded immediately. No worries about gumming up your sand paper either... It's not made for wet sanding, but I've used it successfully for that. Normally I'd wet sand the high build, but it's too cold out for that. Doing it dry with 320 followed by 400-600 depending on the area. I'd probably do 600-800 if I was using a single stage paint, but the SPI clearcoat lays out so smooth, it doesn't show any sanding scratches.

Inside ther toolbox is a hard area to paint. The spray gun just doesn't fit. I gave up trying to make it nice with basecoat clearcoat. Since it's destined to hold, well tools, I decided to apply tinted bedliner (to match my Jeep's President Red) inside. Appled with a roller.

Took a break from bodywork and paint and finished restoring the heater controls. I made a waterslide decal for the text using a laster printer on white waterslide decal paper.

First, the metal bezel was painted black. After it dried, I scuffed where the decal was to go and applied it. After drying it overnight, I gave it a coat or two of matte clear. After that dried, I carefully cut out the openings. Using a sharpie, I touched up wherever the white decal underlayment showed around the holes. Then coated it again with matte clear enamel.

The clearcoat before cutting out the openings was necessary since the decal is so thin. It was too easy to tear it off while slicing. The added thickness of the clear made it a snap.

The controls turned out fantastic.

 

Everything looking awesome. I am getting ready to replace some floors and noticed your rotisserie. Looks like it bolts to the tailgate latches in the rear, how about the front? I'd love a couple details if you don't mind. Thanks,
