Brake Shoes

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by johnny and sandy, Dec 19, 2019.

  1. I have a bunch of brake shoes that are inundated with grease and brake fluid, however there is a lot of meat lining left on them I would like to clean and use them since they have a lot of wear left on them.
Any good ideas on how to clean them so I can reuse them? I tried boiling them in water and then putting them in the oven to dry them out but all that did was make the lining come loose from the metal.

As far as I know, they’re junk. Once the liner becomes saturated, there’s no coming back.

Wash them in Lacquer Thinner, that or Acetone, that dissolves oil and grease, then sand them with 100 grit paper to rough them up a little. I would put new on myself, brakes you need the most, and you want to be Safe. Good Luck.

Mmm. I agree with the junk assessment. AFAIK there's nothing you can do that will remove enough of the oil to make them usable.

It happened to me, even when we clean well, it doesn't last long, I bought new shoes.

brakes are cheap enough. not worth it. I did that with mine and lasted a week then had to turn drums down because it burned into the drum surface.
