I put new drum and shoes on the TC mounted brake couple weeks go. I put a little anti seize on the adjusters threads. I turned the adjusters out so the pads just rubbed slightly. A day or two later I have next to no brake. Checked the adjusters and somehow screwed themselves in. Did the same thing a few days later. Why?

Isn't there a spring in there to keep the adjusting wheels in position?

I just did mine and IIRC, the top spring holds the shoes together and goes under a tab which forces the side of the spring against the star wheels preventing their rotation.

This may help. Note the tabbetween the star wheels? That tab is used to hold the shoes against the backing plate and functions as a resistance force against the stars so they won't rotate without intention. CAM00548-1.jpg

Here is a picture of what Lee Bennett is referring too:

Only the two springs that hold the shoes together.

I have the spring under the tab correctly but nothing touches the adjuster wheels.

Shoes backwards? Spring holes in different positions on the shoes in 55 Willys CJ5 picture.

Alright, I think I put the springs under the tabs on both sides. Not like in your picture. I also looked at the Kaiser Willys video and they only put spring under on one side.

I'll try try to push that spring over and free of the clip tonight after work. I really don't want to take the yoke apart again. :banghead:

Thanks for the replays I'm pretty sure this will fix it.

I may be wrong but from the picture, it looks like the shoes are not on correctly. The shoes end with the bump should be touching the adjuster wheels. The pic shows the other end of the shoes touching the adjusters.

Well I wasn’t able to get the spring over and onto the wheels with the drum on so I can change that as well when I get in there.
