Putting the 231 together for 3B project today. Couple dips in the pool. Walked the dogs. Other than that this took me most of the day. Forgetting to put in the spring and puck on the end of the cam shaft didn’t help save any time. :banghead: Otherwise I had a great time working on this. Cleaning, painting, wrenching.

I had the same hardtop & doors you have on my Green 1975 CJ-5... I loved those doors...

My wife likes the hard top. I keep reminding her we live in Florida. 2 small windows that has got to be HOT!

The Kelly hard top on my CJ5 is much nicer than the one on the 3B. It really depends on how and when you all use the 3B as to a hard top being preferrable. Biggest thing is the cost of a soft top nowadays and how long it can be made to last.

Got about half way done welding up the holes in the grill. Starting on the left the holes were smaller and flatter. Now getting bigger and curved with the grill.

Cut some wire or get TIG filler wire and use both. Pull the trigger, apply wire and heat and simultaneously add filler wire. IT can deposit a lot more material to the rust lace without s much burn through. Grind smooth and hit the holes or pits with the MIG. Might want to make some coper or aluminum spoons to dissipate teh heat and lessen burn through as well. Get some scrap metal and shove it in the large holes to fill them up too.

Steel hard tops are loud inside.

Going to the N. GA swap meet this weekend so no Jeep work getting done.

But the grill is ready to hide up in the attic with the other body parts. (Jeep body parts)

It’s hard working on two old Jeeps at once. I hoped to be further along by now.

Two fenders straightened, welded and primed going into storage. I guess the tub is next. Only evenings for the next few weeks. Busy October planned.

I got my CJ5 to a point where it doesn’t “Need” any work so I pushed the 3B into the garage.

Quick look around I noticed these parts on the top of the wheelhouse will definitely interfere with the new (to me) rollbar. Any issue with knocking these off the Jeep?

If nothing else, they keep the top rail from getting floppy. If the roll bar goes into the sides, cut away. If not, you might want to find away to stiffen it up a little.

Seats, seatbelts and fuel tank out. Started taking old stuff off the dash. Cleaned the floorboards up a little.
Only one spot where floors are rusted thru. Of course in a corner where the medal is bent a couple different directions.

The gutter around the lid is rusted thru in several spots. I can live with that. The toolbox floor is still whole.

A little progress lately. Took everything out of the dashboard and trashed it. Cleaned, sanded, primed and painted the seat frames and other small parts. Put this stuff away ready to reinstall.

Last night I dropped the transmission and TC.

Anyone want to come take this stuff away?

    This worked.

Just ordered rear corner repair panels and replacement steps from Classic Enterprises.

Remember this is going to have all the running gear out of a 1979 CJ7.
Yesterday I ordered the rebuild kits for T-18 and D-20 TC. Also ordered the adapter for the Buick 231 swap along with new clutch and bearing items. Engine swaps are expensive. But this is going to be a great Jeep.

Nice to have some time to work on the Jeep. Last night I stripped some paint an welded a couple patches over the big inspection plate and antenna hole . These came out better than I thought I could do.

It’s only about 10 bolts but getting this out took lots longer than it should.

Thanks. I will get out my readers and flashlight. The tub is coming off eventually so I’ll get a good look at the whole frame. Going to get some body work and engine mount mocked up first.

Is there a preferred reinforcement / repair technique?
