I bought this roll bar for my 70 CJ. Just started removing rust and found some numbers. I'm wondering if it is OEM, dealer installed, afetrmarket, or what. Can anyone help? 1564783267506-2031206617.jpg CAM00486.jpg

That looks like aftermarket from the shape of the rear support bars. Keep in mind a roll bar wasn't factory supplied until around 1970 with the Renegade. The factory bars through the mid-'70s had a straight rear support bars.

Lee, looks to be aftermarket. The rear support pieces on my factory roll bar on Renegade II are straight. Looks like a decent roll bar, go for it !

Home-made, a one-off. The tubing is too large for a commercial roll bar.

Oh well, it's going on my 70 CJ anyway. I like it fine and it will serve its purpose. It is well made and should clean up nicely. Thanks for the help, guys.

Could be a cut-down bed mounted bar for a pickup. They sometimes used that big tubing to be in scale with the truck. Not sure what truck would be narrow enough to fit the wheel houses of a CJ, but it looks like one of those bars.

Note the OEM and aftermarket bars for the CJ fit really snug between the body edges. You would need to pull them together with a turnbuckle or ratchet strap, or if you were good, bounce the bar past the body edge with your strength and momentum. To be purpose built, it has to be the width of the wheel wells under the edges of the body.

As Donny points out, they were all dealer or customer installed prior to 1974, except for the Renegades.

Good info. I set it in place when I first got it and did have to squeeze it to get it under the lip??? Any clue from those numbers stamped into it? I'll show pics after prime and paint with it installed. Thanks Tim / Donny.

I worked at an off road shop in the 80s and 3" tubing was the hot new thing. Yes even in Jeeps.

Well, paint is done and I feel it looks great. I measured inside the tub and it was 54 1/4 from inside of one top bow socket and the bars are just 54 inches. But, from the weld quality and consistency along a with a stamped order number, I assume there was a aftermarket supplier, probably several. I'll still attach a pic after it gets installed. Thanks for the info guys.

Don't Forget sandwich plates. They will spread the pull of the bolts inside the wheel well.
Is this for the reunion's roll bar requirement?

Here it is setting in place. I think it's great. NOT OEM but very nice quality. Last pic shows it is not as wide as OEM. Didn't have to squeeze it in. CAM00492-1.jpg CAM00493-1.jpg CAM00494-1.jpg CAM00495-1.jpg
