I picked up a master install kit from National Driveline for a little over $100.

I had no idea why I said 30. What I have is a rear Dana 44. Dana 30 is what I want to have in the future for the front for my 62 cj5. Sorry for the confusion.

Is your Dana 44 a tapered or flanged axle?

Don't know. Other than disassembly, how can I tell?:study:

If there is a cap in the center of the hub covering a big nut, it is a tapered axle.

Tapered axle has the little cap in the center of the hub with a nut under it like this...

Flanged axle has no cap/nut (the orange part on this example axle is what you will see in the center of your wheel...

Your '62 will be a tapered two piece style. If you still have the '76 parts Jeep, that has a flanged one-piece axle.

Thought the dana 44 rear went out with the 1975 model. The 76 should be a 2 piece AMC 20 axle.

Pull the cap off, you should see a big nut and pin.

    = Tapered as mentioned.

And then you are going to need to find a large hub puller, a BFH, some new swear words, and search the site for how to get the m-ff-...bleepity bleepin hubs off.

Is one better than the other? Are they interchangeable? I have a 76 cj5 with (I think) an AMC 20. If better, could I swap them? Not the whole axle, just the flanged axle by the flanged one.

I was wrong regarding your '76 CJ in post#10. It should have an AMC 20. Personally, I would prefer the '62 D44, even with the small brakes. The 20 will likely have a tall gear, and the spring perches are likely welded at wider centers. The 20 is also a 2 piece hub, but uses splines. Its not really much of an improvement over the early 2 piece D44 you have. You could swap the complete axle assy, but maybe only the brakes would interchange with the D44, but they are otherwise entirely different axles.
I tried calling you around 6:45 regarding your rear crossmember. I was travelling past you around 8pm with a rear crossmember to measure, but you didn't get the message.

Sorry, Donny! I saw your call but I was at my daughter's recital in a dark theatre full of people. Let me know when can we meet so I can measure and look at a whole piece for once. Thanks a lot!

So...knowing I have a tapered Dana 44, does anyone have the part number of the bearings? Sometimes I can source them cheaper if looked up individually than in a kit.
