1556320068356-239041533.jpg Anyone know about these? Both move freely, with what I can imagine might be functional resistance. Both have a disintegrated rubber boot. Does that boot matter a lot? Options for refurbishing them? Awful expensive to replace for some reason.

The boot is the heart of the pod.........no known method.....there crimped together....try to find something than can be adapted...........have you called any of the old Carburetor re-builders?

Why do you need it. It is normally used in conjunction with A/C. What function does it serve on your Jeep?

On the R2g carb, the dashpot 'softens' or slows the deceleration of the throttle when you let off the gas. It helps minimize the fuel rich condition that develops which reduces emissions and backfire issues (I think).

Dashpot was standard equipment on my '71 dauntless. For a vehicle with a solid type throttle linkage between carb and body this little device helps smooth out throttle on ruff terrain. Cable throttle works wonders in that regard also ( LOKAR )

    This.
I've *heard* that it was especially useful with auto transmissions.

Curiously, the dashpot was only used on carbs for manual transmissions. For 1973 anyhow.

I used to think it was for emissions. And while it may have that effect, they were in use way before people cared about that. Original purpose was to prevent stalling on rapid decel, such is my understanding. Mine will want to do that (or did, its been over a decade..)

I believe this was it's original purpose as well for I did many a tune-ups on cars that had a defective dash-pot but the owners did not want to replace them and the cars performed as well as any other. If you slowly decelerated you would never miss the dash-pot. YMMV

I think many different dashpots would work, find correct length or close, cut to fit, or drill and thread for a round head screw.

I'm not convinced that the rubber bellows part is necessary for proper operation. Pretty sure all that does is keep bugs and dirt out of the canister. There should be a diaphragm inside the unit with an orifice that slows compression (or expansion) of the piston. If the action feels right, I'd clean it, paint it, use it as-is.

I think you are right, Tim. It moves, offers some slight resistance. So many emphatic replies that they were hopeless, and maybe they are, wont know until I have it all hooked up. The stems are pretty wobbly. Maybe the rubber also helped hold it centered.
