How do I remove the hub? I'm using a puller, to no avail. What gives?

I was using the slide hammer as a homemade puller. I'm off to the auto parts store to rent an actual Hub puller.

 

If that is a tapered axle, you'll need a puller like Chris linked above. Auto parts store won't likely have one.

You are in for a treat when it actually pops loose!

 

I told my son put that nut back on. He didn’t listen. Nice scar on his shin.

 

And drum brakes are going on the back.

 

When you do get the right puller, make sure you leave the nut on the axle a few turns. The hub can become a projectile and really hurt you.

It takes alot of force to get them off. Everytime i do it I think the puller is going to break for sure then the hub goes pop. Iv got like 4 or 5 pullers but none broke yet lol

 

My puller has about a 2" fine thread shank, with a large mushroom head for "convincing" once the T-head is tightened. Its all about size for ease of removal.
Your slide hammer is the wrong tool, and way too small.
Like mentioned above, keep the nut on the axle a few threads to keep the puller and hub from flying into (or through!) the wall adjacent to where your working when it decides to come off.

As others have stated, he correct tool makes all the difference.
I did the one in the picture outside on sawhorses with the nut off just to see how violently the hub would come off...it definitely became a small missile when it "let go".
