    Hello,
I'm continuing to battle the steering of my M38A1. It has a Saginaw steering conversion and I'm attempting to rework it to accept an original steering wheel. In doing so I discovered that the angle of the column seems to be different than stock. It tilts more towards the driver, making attaching a city bus sized wheel impractical. The place where the column meets the dash seems stock. However, going through the floor the column seems like it was moved towards the firewall. Attached is a photo. Does anyone have a Jeep they can provide a similar photo of with a stock setup? I can find like photos of a MB but am not having much luck with a M38A1.
    Thanks,
    Ken

I would think it would be the same angle as a CJ5 or 6 of early vintage, but I don't know that 100%.

Thanks for the replies. So here's a random photo I found on the internet. Does this look stock? Bottom edge of the steering column appears to be in line with the top edge of the brake and clutch pedals

Same as above but with the cover off. You can see the tube goes through and is held to the Ross box with a clamp. Maybe yours was cut down. Because your Ross box is gone they had to weld it to a plate to anchor the end. I would be curious when kind of bearing they used at the end with the metal plate. As I recall assembling mine, stock has no bearing at that end of the column. The Ross box acts as the bearing for the bottom end of the column.

The angle of the column to the dash is 45 deg. The column length from dash to wheel is 15 inches. If you drop a line at the end of the column at the steering wheel it lines up exactly at the front of the seat pad. The bottom of the wheel has only 7 inches between it and the seat pad.

The photo of the blue floor is stock location. Your column base is higher up on the floor/firewall, making the angle of the column lower. You will have clearance issues with the stock steering wheel until you move the column base lower.

I got the steering together today. I'm pretty happy with how it came out. Just need to get the exhaust back together and I can take it for a test drive Thanks again for the help.
