Garage Storage

Thinking about storage in my new garage. The garage will have 9 foot ceilings in it. I figure I can put a wall cabinet up against the ceiling, come down 4 or 5 feet. The issue is accessing the cabinet. Was looking at a "library ladder". These would ride on the cabinet and you climb 90 degrees to the cabinet. Do not know if the ladder will be away from the wall to much and not have enough room. Was looking for a ladder that will run parallel to the cabinet run. I hope I explained this so it is understandable. Do not want to fool with a step ladder.

Any ideas, insight. Steve

 

I've installed two library ladders in wine cellars, and both clients regretted the design. You basically need two hands to climb the ladder, so carrying items (especially heavy or awkward items) up or down is tough. Combine that with the wasted space that the ladder is always taking up (both real space and the clear path it needs to travel), and it's drawbacks begin to outweigh the benefits.

Chances are you'll have a rolling tool cart of some sort? You could use the bottom section to house a step stool that is either removable from the bottom, or folds out to use the top of the cart as the top step? Just spitballing here...

 

Garage will be 12 to 13 foot wide, will lose 25 inch with base/floor cabinets.

also the cost of having one made or making one yourself is high. Sourcing the hardware and the expense alone is tough. I still want one cause they look cool though.

 

I put cabinets on the back wall of my garage. The doors slide and I wish they were regular outward opening doors because these stick and get out of track.

I found a Senior Shower Chair at a Garage sale, it has a removable back on it. It is great for washing my truck, or to step up on to reach a little higher. It is very light, and very stable, easy to move around by the handle in the back, and can be adjusted for height. I keep one in the box of my truck, it is the only way I can get in the box. Good Luck

 

I have one that came from a library we put a handicapped ramp on, I use it to get on the balcony in the shop. no sliding hardware here,I hinged the top so I can lift it off the floor. my shop has 16 foot ceilings.

 

Found this one on Ebay, it moves parallel to the wall or the cabinets. This would be the way to go. After reading replies here, thinking a different about this.

Items, tools in the cabinet would be used not that often, if all. Paint guns, flaring tools, timing light, you know what I am talking about. Might be over thinking this.

I have a 9' ceiling in my garage also. About a decade and a half back, Craftsman had a sale on their steel wall cabinets and I bought a bunch of them. They are 28" tall and that leaves a standard door height below them. I access them by a Cosco fold out 2 steep stool for the lower shelf and a 6' ladder for the high shelf. I store the stuff I don't need to access much on the high shelf. Certainly not perfect but works well enough that I have no desire to change it.


I also built this wall mounted shelf storage unit that fits above 6' wall cabinets.




Hopefully, you are installing 5/8s drywall. If you plan on any welding/cutting/grinding, it's REALLY cheap insurance. For the same reason, there are no wood cabinets in my garage or shop and no floor treatment other than finished concrete.

 

Ahh..............Storage..........never seem to have enough in the right place............

I like all your Craftsman stuff John...........decades from now when Sears / Craftsman's is just a memory.....your relatives will have a field day selling that to some rich dude who wants to outfit his period correct shop?

 

I looked through that thread. You have things well organized in your shop. I will get a magnetic tool mat for all those wrenches I have that won't stay organized.
I have lots of garage space, just too many vehicles in there.

I could think of worse problems.

 

I feel like a set of rolling stairs might be a thing to look into. Safer and more convenient than a ladder but still pretty portable. I will grant they don't look amazing and they do take some floor-space. I never would have thought to buy a set but tripped over one that just needed some repair and I'm impressed at how well it has worked.

A state-wide hardware store chain (Orchard Supply) recently went out of business so I scored a bunch of pallet racking to use as a mezzanine. I'm now debating the best way to get to the 7' level.

 

1 - I have 2 spaces for work in my barn. One is for clean work, no dust production, and one for more dusty work and larger, for big parts. For wood, steel, cleaning, painting...
2 - I started to throw away or sell or give all not needed, it makes boxes and boxes. better to concentrate on what is useful.
3 - I try to have all above the surface of the ground, a space enough to clean and if water comes, no problem. All in visibility.
4 - I try to use furnitures with cupboards full closed, to avoid visitors from under. I modify furnitures to have them fully hermetic !

 

Ordered some cabinets for the garage,went with these.

From what I have read, a lot of time these cabinets get damaged during shipping. So I got them from Home Depot, if there is damage, HD can deal with it. When they are shipped to HD, it should be though a common carrier, what should be better than UPS or FedX
