Tail Gate Jeep Or No Jeep That Is The Question

I have a 1972 Jeep cj5 with a tail gate with no insignia, It appears to be original in age , but where you would think that Jeep insignia would be it is just blank, Any ideas please

 

64 to 71 didn't say anything. I thought that 72 started the Jeep on the tailgate. Maybe an early 72?

 

'71 I know for a fact had the AMC badge on the tailgate. Lower left corner iirc and it was removable, stuck on with double sided emblem tape. I still have one around here somewhere. Not sure about '70.

 

Thank you for that good info, and yes mine is a very early production August 1971, I will have to see what the original AMC badge on the tail gate looked like

 

Willy's on the tail gate ended after the 63 model year is that correct

 

interesting . my 71 has jeep stamped in tailgate . and had the little AMC emblem nick talked about . but I don't consider it a AMC jeep . they didn't start till 72 model year

 

'75 CJ-6 showing Jeep lettering and AMC badge. AFAIK AMC started to apply the AMC badge as soon as they took ownership of Jeep, ie 1970 or '71 at the latest.



If the OP has a tailgate that looks old with no lettering or badge, I would suspect that the tailgate was replaced back in the day with the earlier type service part that has weathered along with the Jeep.

Thank you for this it does appear that mine was replaced with a little bit earlier tailgate at some point. My understanding AMC purchased Jeep in Feb 1970 but did very little changes at all until 72 model yr but tailgate insignia could have definitely been one of the early changes

 

Some changes were made for '71 in particular, but most could have been in the pipeline before the takeover. The changes in '72 were mostly converting to the AMC engines and upgrading drive train components. Wheelbase was lengthened to accommodate the AMC inline sixes. The complete makeover was in 1976, when almost everything that had not been changed in 1972, changed.

question is the JEEP on back of tailgate just stenciled or is the lettering raised from a stamping, Thanks

 

Should be embossed or stamped raised lettering, but to be sure it's "Jeep" just like in timgr's pic, and not all caps.
