Glove Box Lid Parts

Two questions....
1. What is the purpose of this squiggly thing? Is it shaped right? It was all mangled and I did some straightening on it but can't see anywhere the hook catches.


2. Where can I find a new latch? I hate to give up on this one because it matches the ignition key, but the button doesn't push in even after a 24 hour soak in PB Blaster. If I press the retainer hook down a bit, then the button will push in the rest of the way and retract the hook. It just won't retract the hook without a push on the hook.

The first item should be straight. It hooks on a screw when the glove box open to keep it level. Is there a screw on the right side of the opening for it to catch on?

 

The latch can easily be taken apart and cleaned. Just be careful of the springs on the inside.

I have a small self tapping screw in that location, but nothing as elaborate as yours. Need to look in my junk drawer and come up with sometning better now that I know what it is supposed to look like.

I thought about taking the latch apart. Looks like I just straighten one tab on the back side then the other two slide out. Sounds like a rainy day project.

I think you could use a nylon bushing, a small fender washer and a pan head metal screw to duplicate the catch. Your hook would catch on the bushing. There is a slot in the glove box for the hook arm when the door closes. I had to cut that slot in the plastic repop glove box when I installed it.

As far as the latch, mine stuck some too.
Took apart, sanded and polished everything slick, now
It's smooth enough my 8year old can open it?

 

I was able to get mine apart except for getting the cylinder out. I couldn't see what it was catching on, but I got to it enough to smooth out the ramps. I could get to them with a small fine file from my gunsmithing tools. A few drops of gun oil and it works fairly well now. We don't keep anything valuable in there anyway.

 

Here goes my first try to reproduce that missing part on my glove box lid! I am almost sure more adjusting/tweaking will follow!

I have that in the back burner, but it looks like it will come out fine. I've been busy working on my T90 and TC. This week I'll look into it.

 

How did you get the latch apart? I have issues with mine and hesitant to pry.

Anyone know how to ge the lock cylinder out? I took my ignition switch apart cleaned lubed. Works great, glove box latch looks way different.

My latch was busted and it looks beyond repair. I am looking into a replacement but no such luck.

 

How did you get the latch apart?

Mine had 1 or 2 tabs holding a plate in place. I gently straightened the tabs with a brass punch and small hammer. The metal is very soft, so no need to go medieval on them. If the tabs break, game over.

Getting the plate off gave me enough room to get a small, fine gunsmithing file in there to smooth up the edges.

Be careful removing the plate. There is at least 1 spring in there so don't let it get away.

There is a hole in the side of the lock case by the latch end. Turn the key to Accessory, push in the hole with a paper clip, there is a brass clip in there when you push it in the whole tumbler comes out. Takes some messing with, but I have done it. Good luck.
