Found this tag below the driver side bucket. Included are build date, model, trim and options.
    It reads thus:

Pretty neat. I know mine did not have anything like that and I drove it off the dealer floor. Wonder if it was common and usually the dealer removed it and forgot to on yours, or there was something special about yours. But as we all know, nothing was standard with Kaiser-AMC during that switch over. Wonder if it was something AMC was trying out and did not keep doing it.

Not sure, hoped someone here knew or had one as well.
I know mopars have fender tags stamped metal with codes of body, mechanicals, paint and options.
As this has body color sprayed on it, I believe it was attached as a body in white (or primer dip) was sent down the assembly line. Being it's fitted to the headlight opening I can imagine it was a convenient place for line workers to take a peek as to what to bolt onto the rig.
I noticed the first part of the vin is on the tag (the balance would have been created upon completion). It's order number (dealer, sales bank or customer), steering side, not sure about the VDO sequence, the 0340 is the code for Ren II trim.
I don't have any reference for the accessory codes.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    Not sure about that.
It's the standard trim code for black vinyl bucket seats.

As a young lad I would remove all the plastic covering the seats on CJs that had arrived at the lot.
Used to see a lot of build sheets tucked up underneath the seat frames.

I wonder if that was a custom ordered Jeep from the factory...

jpflat2a, I read on this site that the paint/trim code tag reads 999/340 for the renegade black w/ charcoal/pinstripe inserts (and perhaps the paint and stripe treatment??).
The tag appears to have been printed on some sort of perforated tear off tag, joined to adjacent tags and with a tear off (flap?) to cover the printing, or perhaps a duplicate?
I hope to learn more about this tag and hopefully the codes at the bottom.
I know the jeep has california smog and a lighter that may be considered accessories?

The trim code is not Renegade specific I guess is what I was trying to say.
At least not from how it's viewed in the parts manual.
Could I be wrong, heck yea.

Searching this site I found an old post where WYOMIKE linked a Renegade I sales document.
    Special Sales Order Numbers
    and

    http://www.hdts.vcn.com/JEEP/R1 OPTIONS.jpg

From that I see some codes were carried over and I can de-code some of the Accessories:
    970A Safety Package
    312 V6 Engine
    013A Cig Lighter
I need to figure out 362

According to 4xwriter (Jim Allen) in the above linked post - D5262 is the build code for a Baja Yellow Renegade II.
I also imagine several of the Accessory Codes (draw bar, Rear Seat, HD Spgs/Shkls, Rear Seat Belts, Padded Dash, Sun Visors, Heat/Defrost, Adj Driver Seat, Locking Diff and Low Gear Ratio) were part of the Renegade II Package and were not coded separately.
I wonder what comprised the "safety package"?

1971 Universal option 362 is Fuel Vaporization System.

As Jim said, trim code 340 is Charcoal Bucket. They may have also used it for the striped charcoal buckets????
