Renegade 2 Frame

Does a 71 R2 have a unique frame, or same as a standard CJ5?

 

Pretty sure it should have the heavy duty frame, which was also an option in 1971.

 

As I understand there are some parts beside the boxed frame of Renegade II's (HD). They may or may not been options for non-Ren CJ's. My understanding is same as Zoomer about the boxed HD frame.

So, follow up questions....what is different on the frames?
And could you use a standard CJ frame without modifications?
I'm asking for a friend who has a 71 R2 with a badly damaged frame & is looking for a replacement.

 

It has reinforcements on the inside of the frame at the spring hangers for one thing. I have pics at home if you need them, lost my old hosting. Standard frame should work.

I may be able to get better pics if Zoomer can't locate.
If the ren your buddy is looking at has the frame, use it to pattern any reinforcements needed.
I believe the rear rngine support spacers are used to correct drive-line angle (and vibration) that may have been imposed by the heavy springs.

Mine and a few other early Renegade I's seem to have the front frame horns boxed also, but being a Renegade II your's probably would not have this:

I believe all of those options were available on all CJs and most became almost standard parts.

Does your frame horn boxing look like the picture I posted? Several holes spaced throughout?

I posted a topic about the frame horn boxing between the bumper and front spring mount several years ago but there wasn't a lot of response.

This is what mine looks like. It runs from the crossmember under the grill to roughly the bellhousing.

 

I see enough similarities that ours are likely cobbled of the same pieces. Your welds are better

 

I think they all had the boxing above the bump stop. Mine is boxed all the way out to the front bumper as shown in the pic.

The heavy duty frame has the boxing at the spring hanger (non-shackle end) which is a piece as wide as the spring hanger.

 

Now I am curious and need to see if my R2 has the mentioned additional boxing.

 

On the front, the plate runs to the grille, leaving the front frame horns un-plated allowing access to the bolt holes for winch or other accessory mounting.
The plate continues back the rear (fixed) spring hanger of the front spring.

 

My renegade 1 has the boxing in the front from the spring hanger on the front spring forward to the cross member, no boxing near frame horns or in back. April 1970 build date.

 

Mine is identical to NCRenIIs. My Ren II also left the dealer with an 8000 lb Ramsey PTO winch that could not have been mounted if the frame horns infront of the grill were boxed

 

Being the curious type I wonder what the purpose of the frame strengthening.
I also have a theory.
The renegade II had no tailgate and did have a back seat equipped with seat belts. I don't know if a heater is std equip or optional, it has one.
It had the fuel tank relocated out of the passenger compartment to under the passenger area;. It had a roll bar as well as hd frame and springs.
I wonder if these freatures were all required to handle the extra "payload" dynamics on handling and safety to qualify the vehicle as a passenger vehicle rather than a "truck".
Our jeep is registered as a passenger vehicle (no commercial license fee). Factory pics show 4 occupants.
It would be interesting to locate documentation as to why designers did what they did.
Regardless, I know I would not want to be an accident in these little pieces of heavy metal.
