Verifying Before Buying Gl4 And Other Lubs

So as I've read numerous prior posts, I just want to confirm as I get ready to 'stock' fluids I need. The GL4, like Sta-lube, is NOT synthetic and we do NOT want to use synthetic in these old units, especially if we are just topping off fluids. The GL4 is used for the differentials, the tranny, the transfer case and the PTO and the Ross steering box. The corn grease is used in the knuckles only. Oil is up for debate on convention vs synthetic. Since I have both a CJ5 and a Willys wagon, I'm thinking just get enough to have on hand. When inspecting both differentials, I might as well change fluids and gaskets so how much should I expect to use on those initially?

Yes, GL4 in the trans and tcase specifically, you can use GL4 or GL5 in the diffs. Personally, I make my own "knuckle pudding" for the knuckles, I think the cornhead is too thick.

I got Sta-Lub GL4 at Napa in Michigan. The guy there also showed me some GL 4 in Marine lower unit lub. Good Luck

Just don't believe the counter people who say "it's the same thing" when they try to sell you a GL-5.

Buy a case (12) qts, and your covered.

Another option is Brian Hainer (Metalshaper on youtube). metalshaper@comcast.net

If you watch some of his videos, easy to see he knows his stuff. He has worked with engineers from lubrication companies to formulate the correct lubes for these old Jeeps (talks about it in some of his videos). Not inexpensive, but after all the work that goes into rebuilding something, probably smart to make sure to use the correct lubes...and I figure part of it supports his channel.

Does anyone have any actual verifiable self experience with any 90 weight actually doing real harm. I personally have seen ZERO problems in any gear case of any type that can be caused by having the wrong oil. Not having oil is a big problem but this all seems to be internet hysteria that is simply repeated until it is put up as FACT. I would love to see a picture of a gearbox that has been sitting for years with the "wrong" oil in it and show deterioration of the "yellow" metals that are under the oil fill line and are perfect above the oil.

GL-4, GL-5, 90 weight...all better options than what came out of my transmission. IMG_20180908_090828018.jpg

I have not seen it cause damage. I have seen hard shifting, grinding going into gear, and the resulting damage caused by that from using GL-5 in a transmission that requires GL-4. I've seen it many, many times and experienced it firsthand in my own gearbox.

I have seen gearboxes and overdrives not shift well with synthetic 90 weight also. I see people saying that it eats the yellow metal and just wonder if there is anything anywhere to back that up.

Why take a chance when GL4 is available?

I have 2 brass syncro blocking rings from a '62 Austin Healey that I replaced about 18 years ago. The gearbox had been rebuilt about 5 years prior to this, and had less than 300 miles on it. It sat for nearly that length of time. The gear oil was extremely clean, but both syncros had areas of deep erosion on the surface in random spots, including the ridged wear surface, causing the grind when shifting quickly. I can't confirm it was from GL5, but I will bet that was the culpret. I'll see if I can dig them out.

This is the Jeep I just bought with no engine. I'm sure it has been out in the rain for years gathering water in the cases. The good news is the breather has been working perfectly.

The water displaced all the gear oil through the breather vent like the Brady Bunch volcano.

Now I know his name, thanks.[IMG]

That guy is an intriguing YouTube personality--seen a few of his videos, those mentioning lubes especially, and am impressed and already believing his claim that he has "the right stuff".

The gear oil he pumped into the open top of his T90 looked really good with great 'clinging' properties during the demonstration he did. Same good feelings with his steering box lube, etc.

He always says to email him to order and get prices on the lubricants which all seems a bit awkward and mysterious. In other words, he might do real well with a website and some honest exposure and our patronage, for one.

Did you order any lube from him, @TIm E ?
