Orignal style headlight switch

Not sure if it was here or on the 3B page, but I remember a couple of years ago there was a discussion about the old style headlight switches that turned the park lamps off when the headlights were on. The discussion was mainly about the lack of a source for such a switch. It may be that they are readily available, but I've never been able to find one before today. The NAPA/Echlin PN is HL6049. It has the seperate terminals to operate the park lights and taillights independently. As far as I know all flatfenders and at least the earliest of 5's and 6's used these type switches. Just thought someone might be interested.

I got a switch of ebay that was supposedly for a IH. It is a "modern" type switch in that it uses the push on plastic connector and male/female spade terminals, and has hookups for dimmer, panel lights, dome light, etc. AND it turns off the front parking lights when turning on the headlights!
I had originally switched to a regular late model Jeep switch to gain courtesy, dome, and dimming panel lights. When I found out the stock setup turned OFF the parking lights with the headlights on, I tracked this one down. Don't know the part number off hand but could find out.
I reused my original knob, just cut off the other one and threaded the old one on. Looks bone stock except you can turn it to dim the panel lights!

Chevy truck headlight switches had this option. I just put a 70 - 72 truck switch in my 72 cj and was checking each post location for power in each position. One of the contacts had power to the parking lights when the headlights were on and another contact had shut down power to the parklights when the headlights came on. I thought the switch might be bad so I pulled the new switch out of a friends '81 chevy truck and it was the same way. Neither truck was using the contacts but they were still there and I will bet that almost any parts store carries that switch.

Tractor Supply Company is where I got mine. You can wire the parking lights to go off or stay on with the headlights on. Or just have the parking lights on.

Seems like they were about $10.00 and they had a built in fuse holder that held a glass fuse.

Why do you want the parking lights to go off when the headlights are on? When you say parking lights you mean running lights right? Or am I missing something? Don't you need running lights at night in addition to headlights?

The stock setup was for the front running/parking lights to go off when the headlights were on. Don't know why or what year that stopped. My wiring was a basketcase when I got the Jeep, so I started basically from scratch and wired them the usual way. When I heard what it was supposed to be, I decided to change just for the heck of it. I will probably have to do one more state safety inspection (which I totally disagree with by the way, I think it is a state sponsored scam) and I can't wait to see their face when I tell em its stock that way...

Kevo, early cj5's front (not the taillights) running lights would turn off when you pulled the switch far enough to turn on the headlights, but the turning signals still worked. Besides if you can see the headlights coming at you, do you really need to see the tiny running lights as well? This also lowers the amp draw on the early 6 volt setup.

My 67 did not, but it had what looked like factory cut holes. I say factory because they were very cleanly cut, and had like a little tab at the bottom. But when I got the factory backup lights and tried to install them, they didn't fit, so who knows? I had to cut the hole out a little larger. The tranny did not have a backup light hookup, but someone had swapped out the factory 225 for a F4/t90 from who knows what year so that doesn't help either.

  12. Do you know if you have the correct year backup lights? It seems the only people who know what was/is factory/stock was the guys in the factory.
