    Only a 198 intake will fit on a 198. They are about a 1/4" narrower then a 225/231. I have a 198 in a 2a that has the same intake.

The new (correct) head gaskets arrived today so I started disassembling again. In the process I finally identified three stuck valves (explains the three bent pushrods). I managed to work them free once the heads were off.

Is there still any reason why I shouldn’t run it as is?

Nice looking cj2a. Good luck with bringing it back to life. I am a fan of the 225 and to some degree the even fire 231. Especially a 231 with HEI. I would go 225 if it were me, but its probably because I have 5 or 6 kicking around, well that and they are a little beast. Just saying and I'm not sure that calling them a beast is socially correct anymore, but that's THE BEST TECHNICAL TERM I COULD COME UP WITH.

The 225 is compact, powerful for its displacement and vintage, uncomplicated, reliable, durable, outwardly conventional, and light weight. Nothing to sniff at. It was an inspired choice for the CJ-5 when Kaiser Jeep introduced it in 1966. The Buick V6s were also a bit ahead of their time, which clearly worked to Kaiser's advantage. I'd expect you get most of that with the 198 too, though you have to deal with its oddball/orphan status and it's only 88% of the displacement of the 225.

As I said before - kicked the 198 to the curb long ago. Never regretted it. I can do SO much more with either the 225 or the 231 OF/EF including HEI and EFI on any of them.

IF you think this motor will last the time your going to have with the rig, and your satisfied with it's current power and options, go for it... before sinking any more money in it - look at the other options.

Good points and this has been on my mind. I do have access to a 225/t90/d18 in unconfirmed condition for a price of course. It's the struggle between making what I have work, which will likely cost a bunch of money, versus investing a bunch of money in upgrades. I'm hoping to make the 198 work since it's what I have, but I'm not committed to it either.

So I now have the correct head gaskets for my 198. They're "Best Gaskets", I think that's the brand/manufacturer - I dunno. They look like the same material that a lot of exhaust manifold gaskets I've seen - kind of puffy looking aluminum or something. Hopefully my description is helpful...

Anyway, what should I dress the gaskets with, if anything? Should I spray them with Permatex copper? Use silicone? What do you guys with the 198 suggest?

I think I would ask the manufacture. Best Gasket is a US gasket manufacture in southern California. Email them @ info@bestgasket.com or call them @ 888-333-2378.

I have a preference for using Permatex copper spray for that type of head gasket. See what the manufacturer says, but I think the copper spray will work well.

Does anyone have torque specs for the 198 head bolts? I still need to get it put back together and between the frame rails. I've been working on the tub instead. I don't have a manual or anything for the 198 and haven't been able to find much detail online. Thanks
