Aftermarket Axle Shafts

I believe these fit a centered nt Dana 44. What is the length for the shafts so I can check?

 

25 1/4" off the memory??? I have a set in the garage I can go measure if no one else has it.

 

Mine measure exactly 25".

 

One is longer than the other. I guess I will have to measure them.

 

You sure they are not for a Corporate 20? The D44 and M20 brakes '76-77 are mostly the same. Did they come with a housing?

 

Are the backing plates six bolt? The 20 has a funky 5 hole flange.

 

Unrelated to the axles, can the M20 backing plates be redrilled to fit the 44? Is the offset from the axle end the same? D44 11" backing plates have been getting more scarce in the past decade, so maybe the M20 11x2 can be made to work with Dana axles? The parts book shows the rear 11x2 Bendix continuing through mid-1978 untill replaced by the 10x1.75 used exclusively with front disk brakes (I presume). Looks like only the backing plates are different.

 

The 20s are totally different on the mounting flange. I suppose you could cut out the center and weld in one from a 9 or 10" plate but that would be pretty labor intensive. The 20 backing plates are getting scarce also as so many hubs have come off and ground down the backing plate needing a replacement. The torque spec was rarely if ever adhered to when reassembling a 20 rear end causing most of the bad reputation that the axle has.
