I was hearing a crunching noise coming out of the front end on the CJ5, still havnt found the noise but I appear to only have 9 of the 10 (SE 206 4029)

Not finding anything online, anyone have any extras laying around taking up room

I suggest putting a WTB in the classifieds for the rollers. I assume you are also asking a tech question so I'll leave your post here. :)

As far as the noise have you taken the cover off and looked at the differential yet?

Thanks glen, not yet currently out and about trying to find some bearings and seals for the hub. The old ones were missing the grease

Yep, one missing roller there probably wouldn't make any noise unless the cage or bearing surfaces are messed up. But if it is not missing because it was left out during assembly, there will be more carnage.

Those hubs are really robust and just looking at the design, probably more robust in their "auto" mode than locked in. Best bet to find parts is just to find another hub for parts. O-rings can be had from McMaster-Carr. I used parts from 3 different pairs of hubs to put the last pair I'm using together. Be aware that some of those pieces need to be replaced with matching parts as there were a few minor design changes over the manufacturing run. All the 27 spline parts except the splined hub will interchange with the 10 spline versions.

My last hub project (sorry about the logo---).

I jacked up the front end and spun everything by hand and no crunching noise. The only noise was coming out of the passenger side hub area and it sounded like a bearing. After taking it apart thats when I found out that the missing part and the bearings in a sad state.
So it must be something under load, it does do it while coasting but not always. it comes and goes. Like Glen suggested next step is the front differential cover.

I had a similar noise. It was the inner wheel bearing that had seized to the spindle.

yeah that would make sense as well, when coasting the only part that has any load on it would be those bearings.

When you originally heard the crunching noise were you using the auto feature of the hub or were they locked in?

Looks like a wheel bearing would sure appreciate good grease. :)

But your differential would be turning if you were in 4WD.

It was set to free, I wasnt really aware of the auto function on these

yeah getting 4 new bearings and two seals. going to do both sides. Napa didnt have Timken but did have SKF's.

It would be only if the hubs where engaged, correct?

Set to free is the auto feature. On your parts diagram look at SE 206 4038. Those little nylon blocks are basically clutches that lock on the round drag nut when in the free position. Easiest way to understand what happens is by turning the driveshaft by hand and with functioning Lock-o-matics you can only turn it so far before it catches.

I have a complete one and a broken one in parts that I can dig out later. I'll take a pic of the broken one. The complete one won't help because it's the wrong spline count unless you have a front 30.

well you learn new things every day.

its a d27. yeah let me know, i could at least use some of the parts.

nothing obvious in the differential, and the driver side hub and bearings look good. it must have been just that passenger side bearing on its way out.
bonus points if you can spot the strange thing in the pic. I have personally never seen anything like this before but it might have been a normal thing to do back in the day.

The added tubing support around the cast housing? Interesting. I had my 30 apart over the winter and gave it extra support there too. Mine was cracking the housing and folding in half, even with a truss. More proof that CJs weren't really meant to fly.

I have seen them trussed. I had never seen a sleeve before. It is one piece so someone would of had the tube off to install it

That is where they break ... typically from Rat Patrol action. The end of the casting breaks and the tube hinges down some.

When you reassemble the hubs don't put any lubrication on the little nylon blocks or the drag nut, and put minimal lubrication on anything near it. Getting dirty or greasy makes them slip.
